Farming Matters - Amie Burke: "Why should you consider a career in food and farming?"

Why would you want to work in this industry? It's a question worth asking, and perhaps even more worth answering.

At a time when labour shortages challenge every part of the food system, how do we inspire people to see the opportunities that lie within it?

The food industry offers a rich and rewarding career path, with roles that span science, sustainability, logistics, marketing, innovation and more. It's a sector that touches everyone's lives every day, and yet its breadth and impact are often overlooked.

So how do we shift perceptions? How do we help people see the variety, the purpose and the potential of working in food?

Having spent most of my career in agriculture and the past three years in the food industry, I've seen the contrasts, but also a powerful common thread: both sectors struggle to showcase just how thrilling and rewarding a career here can be.

Background

So, how did I end up in agriculture, then food? Pure serendipity! I stumbled upon Harper Adams while searching for a business course, and instead discovered the vibrant, purpose-driven world of agriculture.

I felt instantly at home. Sure, my friends and family in Birmingham raised eyebrows, armed with stereotypes and assumptions, but I saw it as a golden opportunity to educate them about the dynamic, diverse roles that exist in this space.

The food industry came calling in a similar way. A chance conversation about volunteering for an Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) employability workshop turned into a career-defining leap into diversity and inclusion. Today, I get to collaborate with businesses across the entire food supply chain.

So, why should you consider a career in food and farming?

If you're passionate about feeding a nation?

If sustainability gets your heart racing?

If you love turning science into delicious, innovative products?

Then this industry is calling your name.

Mmmake Your Mark

I'm proud to be an ambassador for the Mmmake Your Mark campaign, a movement that's all about raising the profile of careers in food and farming. It's a rallying cry to show that there's a place for everyone, regardless of background or ability.

If you bring the right attitude, purpose, and passion, we'll help you find your path - just like me, a city girl who loves connecting with people and helping them shine.

That passion has taken me to 22 countries, introduced me to royalty, given me backstage access to food production and, yes, even let me taste brand-new recipes and drive the occasional tractor. What's not to love about an industry bursting with opportunity?

But here's the thing: we're not shouting enough about these incredible roles. We need to tell our stories with fire and authenticity. It's those real, human experiences that spark the imagination of the next generation. Let's show them the open door and watch them soar.
