Auction mart sales round up: Lanark Kerry Hills sell to 7,800gns; Kirkby Stephen Mule gimmer average up; Luing bull tops Working Genes production sale at £17,250

The inaugural Kerry Hill Sheep Society show and sale at Lanark met a flying trade, topping at 7,800gns, with 75 selling overall, to average £876.40 and a clearance rate of 80%.

Sale leader was the pre-sale show overall reserve champion, a shearling ram from Sophie McCarlie, Harthill. A son of Birsca Caspian, and out of a home-bred dam by Pentrenant, it heads to Herefordshire with J. and P. Owens for their Woodhouse flock.

Next at 3,400gns was a second-prize shearling ram from Stuart and Angie Burgess' Top Spot flock, New Abbey. A son of Pentrenant Choir Boy and out of Top Spot Cowgirl, a daughter of Reidstown Rambo, it sold in a two-way share, with three-quarters selling to Anna Smith, West Calder, for her Wester flock, and the remainder to Messrs Dick, Peebles.

Another Choir Boy son from Top Spot led the ram lamb section. Out of Top Spot Angela, a daughter of Wrotham Clifford, it sold to the Dalwyne flock of David Morrison, Girvan.

Averages - 3 aged rams, £455; 18 shearling rams, £1,534.17; 7 ram lambs, £1,170; 28 gimmers, £658.13; 19 ewe lambs, £533.29; 75 overall, £876.40.

Kirkby Stephen Mule gimmer average up on the year

At the annual North of England Mule Sheep Association show and sale of gimmer lambs at Kirkby Stephen, 7,805 lambs were on offer with an overall average of £167.14 achieved, up £12.76 on the year.

The sale topped at £650 for a pen of 10 from Messrs Hutchinson, Redgate, Kirkby Stephen, bought by Ross Sizmur, Okehampton.

Messrs Hayton, Great Asby, took the overall championship with a pen that went on to sell for £450/head to Messrs Brown, Leyburn.

Another £450 bid secured the second prize pen in the restricted class from Messrs Capstick, Ravenstonedale, which sold to Messrs Hewitt, Lancaster.

Messrs Alderson, Baldersdale, sold a pen at £400 to Messrs Holmes, Appleby-in-Westmorland, with Messrs Brown, Great Asby, selling a pen of 10 at £370 and another of 15 at £300 to Messrs Winter, Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The reserve championship went to the second prize pen in the open class from Messrs Dent, Kirkby Stephen, which sold for £360/head to Messrs Allen, Saltburn by the Sea.

Large pens of tupping lambs sold well, with Kilnstown Farm selling a pen of 20 for £225, and Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill, selling a pen of 19 at £200 and a pen of 21 at £195.

Averages – Overall, £167.14 (+12.76 on the year).

Luing bull tops Working Genes production sale at £17,250

At the McGowan family's annual Working Genes production sale of grass-reared Texel and Lleyn rams, it was the more recently established bull sale that stole the headlines this year. 

Held on-farm at Incheoch Farms, Alyth, Blairgowrie, complete clearance was achieved with four homozygous polled Luing bulls leading the trade, topping at £17,250 and averaging £13,500 overall.

The sale leader, a son of Craigdarroch Alves and out of a cow with top classification scores, Dirnanean Dawson PP, has been used at home this summer and sold to David MacArthur, Nunnerie, Biggar.

Two sons of the Canadian AI sire PHS Polled Worldwide sold for £13,250 in the Simmental section, with Incheoch Ross PP going to Douglas Gill, Brucefield, Easter Ross, and Ragusa P to Bruce Hogg, Birkenside, Earlston.

Topping the Texel trade were three top 1% index sons of Fearn Findhorn, finding homes with Brian Ridland, Evie, Orkney, at £4,900, Gareth Ward, West Mains, Carnwath, at £4,300, and Hamish Black, Hillside, Castle Douglas, at £4,000.

A level run of Lleyns topped at £2,800 for the highest index ram, selling to Duncan Nelless, Morpeth. 

Averages - 16 bulls, £10,078 (+£3,341 on the year for 3 less sold); 47 Texel rams, £2,319 (+£474 for 10 less sold); 47 Lleyn rams, £1,050 (-£36 for 8 less sold).


Solpoll production peaks at 13,500gns

Prices peaked at 13,500gns at the 70th anniversary celebration production sale of the Solpoll herd of pedigree Hereford cattle, held on behalf of John and William McMordie at Solitude, Ballygowan, Co Down.

Top price went to Solpoll 1 Starlet B22, a Rempstone Worldwide daughter.

This half-sister to the Northern Ireland record-priced bull, Braveheart, sold, in-calf to Solpoll 1 Boomer, to Paul Sammon of Firmoll Herefords, Tipperary.

Leading the five bulls on offer at 13,000gns was Solpoll 1 Blacksmith, a son of Fabb 1 Top Prize, which sold to Rockness Herefords, Edinburgh.

Solpoll 1 Bruno, one of few sons of Square-D Diesel 957U, sold for 10,000gns to B. and M. Chilman, Kinsham Herefords, Presteigne.

Andrew Shakeshaft, Shropshire, paid 10,000gns for Solpoll 1 Startlet B25, in-calf to Solpoll 1 Boomer, and 9,000gns for Solpoll 1 Fanny A32, in-calf to Rempstone 1 Worldwide.

Another two heifers sold for 6,000gns. Solpoll 1 Dainty B7 sold to Greer Watson, Barnburn Herefords, and Solpoll 1 Stella B24 went home with Jimmy Hodge, Berwick on Tweed.

Averages - 18 females, £5,980; 5 bulls, £8,715; 10 embryos, £430.50; 25 straws of semen, £317.20.

Over Bow dispersal peaks at 6,000gns

The dispersal of the Over Bow herd of pedigree Salers,  at Stirling, on behalf of B. and K. Lyburn, Forfar, topped at 6,000gns for Over Bow Nancy.

This 2018-born daughter of Seawell Landmark, out of Seawell Kalahari, sold with its Bacardi Nevis-sired bull calf at foot to James Morton and Son, Kaeside, Roxburghshire.

Bacardi Nevis daughter, Over Bow Sally, out of Over Bow Nina Poll, made 5,000gns selling to D.M. Keay and Son, East Ballock, Angus. The same buyers also paid 4,900gns for Over Bow Susie, another Bacardi Nevis daughter, this time out of Seawell Kanya and 4,400gns for Over Bow Pixie which sold with its heifer calf at foot.

Rednock reduction

Staged on the same day was the sale of the commercial herd of Salers from Gill and Malcolm Pye's Rednock Estate, Port of Menteith, where a total clearance was achieved, with 47 cows with Charolais-sired calves at foot achieving a top price of 5,400gns and an average of £4,133.

Sale leader was Rednock Swan Poll, a 2021-born polled red cow by Cumbrian Royal which sold with its Thrunton Paddington-sired steer calf to J.M. and W. Turnbull, Kingsbarns, Fife, who invested heavily across the catalogue.

The same buyer also paid 5,000gns for Rednock Dolly Blk, a 2022-born daughter of Drumaglea Kes, which sold with its heifer calf at foot; 4,700gns for Rednock Solar Poll,  a 2022-born polled red cow by Rigel Officer and 4,600gns for Rednock Deirdre Blk.

Among the older cows, Rednock Phebe Blk, a 2016-born daughter of Rigel Byron Poll, achieved 4,600gns when purchased by W. Dunlop and Sons, East Lothian, while Rednock Portugal Poll, a 2020-born daughter of Rigel Munro Poll, made the same money selling to Messrs Turnbull.

Averages – Over Bow dispersal: 25 cows with calves at foot, £4,133; in-calf cows, £2,888. Rednock reduction: 47 cows with calves, £4,133.

Croydon House dispersal sells to 2,900gns twice

The dispersal of the Croydon House herd of Red Ruby Devons, on behalf of John and Pippa Prideaux at Cutcombe market, saw trade peak at 2,900gns twice.

First at this money was Croydon House Hope 18, a 2021-born cow by Croydon House Kissabull which sold with its steer calf at foot and in-calf again to Croydon House Proveabull to S.A. Raggett, Ashburton.

Another 2,900gns call secured Croydon House Maid 9, a Croydon House Knowledgeabull daughter which sold with its heifer calf at foot, selling to P.A. Webber, Thelbridge.

Making 2,250gns to top the in-calf heifers forward was Croydon House Tricia 50, by Croydon House Mirabullis which sold to John Stanbury, South Molton.

Croydon House Showgirl 18, another Mirabullisdaughter, made 2,050gns selling to John and Sue May, Crediton.

Averages - Cows and calves, £2,548; 49 heifers, £1,369; steers, £860.

New market record for cow and calf

A new market record for a cow and calf was set at Norwich Market's Ladies Day and Cattle Breeding Show. Selling for £10,200,  was for the champion outfit, a British Blue cross cow with a March-born Limousin-sired heifer calf at foot, from Margaretting Hall Farms, Stock, Essex.

It sold to the judge, Anita Padfield, Potter Heigham, Norfolk. The reserve champion, a pedigree Limousin bull from D. and S. Wharton, Harleston, made £6,500, selling to Messrs Liverton Laxfield, Suffolk.
