Silver Lining takes LiveScot title

Exhibitors were back at Lanark Auction Mart over the weekend for the popular LiveScot event, held at Lanark Agricultural Centre.

Held while storm Arwen battered the country, some exhibitors were absent after fallen trees blocked their routes to the show. However, this did not detract from the quality of entries forward.

Taking the overall beef supreme championship were Fife-based exhibitors Craig and Katreen Malone with their cross-bred champion Silver Lining.

Charolais

Winning the heavyweight steer championship, the 14-month-old Charolais cross steer came to the supreme on the back of heading the overall steer title after lifting the heavyweight steer championship.

Bred by Duncan and Judy Semple, Dippen Farm, Carradale, sired by Carradale Felix and out of a Limousin cross cow, the steer was purchased by the Malones in September at United Auctions, Stirling, where he had stood overall show champion.

It weighed 622kg and later sold to £5,600 to B. and T. Kitson, North Yorkshire, in the post-show sale later in the day.

Reserve supreme was the heavyweight heifer champion Babybell, a Limousin cross from Blair Duffton, Huntly.

The March 2020-born heifer, by Limousin bull Pabo Mr Muscle and out of a Limousin cross British Blue cow, was bred by Gary Bell, Lockerbie, and bought by Mr Dufton at the Thainstone spring-born calf sale in October 2020, where she had stood third.

She was placed third at the Royal Highland Showcase event in June and recently placed second at Agri-Expo at Carlisle. The heifer weighed 574kg and sold for £3,800 to B. and T. Kitson.

Mr Dufton was also reserve in the overall heifers with his lightweight champion Truffles, a 14-month-old Limousin cross and, to round off a memorable day, his two heifers were pair champions.

Home-bred

The calf champion was Jenifer Hyslop with her home-bred spring-born calf Brownie, sired by the Limousin bull Uptonely Living The Dream.

The heifer has stood second at Agri-Expo and overall junior commercial champion at Stars of the Future.

Housewives choice champion was Wilson Peters' Limousin cross heifer, Roxy Delight. Home-bred, she weighed 556kg and sold to the judge Mr Raeburn for £4,000.

Beltex

In the overall sheep championship, it was the butchers' champion which was selected for the supreme, a pair of Beltex lambs from the Hall family, Penrith, with their lightweight pair. Weighing 42kg, they sold for £680 to

Mathiesons Butchers, Edinburgh.

The reserve was another pair of Beltex lambs, the heavyweight pair from John and Kirsty Guthrie, Crieff. Weighing 45kg, they sold for £400 to Jimmy Stark, Milton of Campsie.

Taking the overall championship in the dairy ring was John Baillie, Ashgill, with four-year-old April-calved cow, Dalserf Demon Coreliske.

Reserve went to Blyth Farms, West Linton, with the Stantons Alligator daughter, Blythbridge Alligator Alice.
