Champion lamb sell for £1,500/head at Carlisle

IT was a clean sweep for Messrs Storey, Haltwhistle, at Carlisle's Christmas show and sale of prime lambs.

Their champions were the winning pen of four from the any other breed class, 50kg Dutch Texels, which went on to sell for a prime lamb record of £1,500/head to Mr Alam, Lancashire Direct Halal, Blackburn.

They also claimed the reserve champion rosette with their pen of four 54kg Beltex lambs which made £950/head to the same buyer. 

They also had the champion single lamb, a Beltex cross which sold for £1,300 to the judge, Hannah Wood, Bowland Foods, Preston.

Outwith, the show lambs averaged 318p/kg (SQQ 333p/kg) including 2,000 heavy lambs which are getting harder to sell, according to the auctioneers.

Cull ewes averaged £139.47/head topping at £250/head three times for continentals from Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale, Messrs McWhirter, Carlisle, and Messrs Faulder, Ewan Close.

Suckled calves peak at £5,400 at Barnard Castle

IT was the reserve champion suckled calf which sold for the top price of £5,400 at the show and sale of breeding and store cattle at Barnard Castle.

This was a British Blue-sired heifer from R. Hutchinson and Son, Valley Farm, Bowes.

The champion was a Limousin-sired heifer from K.O. Stones, Marrick.

They also had the winning any other breed steer which sold for £2,420 and the second prize winning any other breed heifer which made £4,400.

Their consignment of seven topped the suckled calf averages at £3,014.

The winning Limousin-sired steer from J.W. Dent and Sons, Lartington, sold for £2,400 and their second prize winning Limousin heifer made £3,900.

Averages - suckled steers, £2,082; suckled heifers, £2,048; feeding bulls, £1,986; store steers, £1,984; store heifers, £1,837.

Strong dairy trade at Shrewsbury

THE Hares family, Millenheath Farms, Whitchurch, won the Bryan Challenor Cup for the second successive year at the Christmas Cracker Dairy show and sale at Shrewsbury, where a record breaking entry of 100 dairy cattle went under the hammer.

Their champion was the winning cow, Millenheath Spring Bernice, which sold for £4,000.

The reserve champion prize went to the show's top heifer, Glanmarton Mingus Grace from C. D. Whitticase, St Martins, which sold for £3,650.

Sterndale AM Jodie Red from W. J. Nadin and Co, Buxton, runner-up in the cows section, sold for £3,600, while Whitgreave Applaud Sally from Paul Stubbs, Stafford, sold for £3,380 to an online bidder.  

The top price heifer, at £3,680, was Bentleyford Lock Mona from Robert and Charlotte Higgins, Longnor.

Averages – 33 cows, £2,713; 57 heifers, £2,507.

Texels sell to 2,100gns at Worcester

HEREFORDSHIRE-based Nick Legge's Thornbury flock took the championship and top price of 2,100gns at the Gloucester and Borders Texel Club's Christmas Present in-lamb sale at Worcester.

Leading the sale was a daughter of 100,000gns Glenside Forever II, which sold carrying twins to Mellor Vale I Spy, to Kay Dawe, Holsworthy.

Top price gimmer from Thornbury flock

Next at 2,000gns, from the Chave family's Peacehay flock, Wellington, was a Strathbogie Epic daughter in-lamb to Midcombe Inferno, which sold to Maria Cork, Ashbourne.

At 1,900gns was the champion, another from Thornbury. By Ettrick Grey Goose, it sold in-lamb to Thornbury Invictus, to Andy and Becky Golledge, Standish, Gloucestershire.

Ewe lambs topped at 1,800gns for the first prize winner by Okehall Hot Shot, from James Theyer's Clanfield flock, Oxfordshire, which went home with Steve and Rachel Stamp, Highbridge, Somerset.

Averages; 33 gimmers £957.09, 3 ewe lambs £1137.50, 10 recipients carrying embryos £475.65.

Limousins lead Colchester prices

LIMOUSINS secured the top prizes and prices at the Christmas show and sale at Colchester.

The champion, a 534kg Limousin-cross heifer from William Ketley, Fingringhoe, topped the price per kilo at 575p (£3,070.50) when selling to Ben Whiting on behalf of East Anglian Trailers.

A 613kg Limousin steer from Liam Byam, Swilland, stood reserve and sold to John Coleman, Boxted, for the top gross price of £3,218.25 (525p/kg).

Dutch Texels from Zoe Norton and Gary Aungier, Bures, stood champion lambs before selling to the judge, John Coleman, for £210/head but it was the reserve pair, Texel crosses from Tom Biela, Brettenham, that topped at £240/head when selling to George Debman, Ipswich.

Champions top trade at Wigton

THERE were double celebrations for the Hall family, Penrith, when they secured the champion and reserve tickets as well as top price at the Wigton Christmas show and sale.

Leading the entry was the champion duo, a pair of 50.5kg lambs that went on to make £300 when bought by the judge, James Thompson, on behalf of Bowland Foods.

Reserve was a lightweight pair that again sold to Bowland Foods, this time for £245.

Leading the young handlers was E. Jarman with a 57kg Dutch Spotted, which later sold for £230.

The champion cattle entry, a 796kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Grainger, Wigton, topped the sale at 690p/kg or £5,492.40, when sold to Matthew Clark, Dearham, on behalf of a client.

In the commercial section, a 641kg Limousin heifer from Alan Barnett, Shap, sold for 625p/kg or £4,006.25, while Limousins also led the bullocks at 451p/kg from Messrs Dixon, Wigton, and £3,358.20 from Messrs Cape, Wigton.

National calf record at Gisburn

A CHAROLAIS heifer set a national record when it sold for £1,820 at the Christmas calf show and sale at Gisburn.

At slightly more than two months old, it was sired by Poirot and consigned by Chadwick and Leaver, Burnley, and sold to an undisclosed buyer form Driffield.

The same home also sold a rising two-month-old Limousin bull for £1,110 and the reserve champion, a Simmental bull which sold to the judge, Ben Darwin, Sheffield, for £1,040.

The first prize British Blue cross heifer from R., G. and M. Falshaw, Bury, realised £1,300.

Blue Texels top at 1,550gns at Worcester

A BLUE Texel lamb from Natalie Legge, Bromyard, led the sale of pedigree females at Worcester when it topped the trade at 1,550gns.

This was Westwood Kim K, a January-born entry that secured the championship before selling to Charlotte Hocken, Cheltenham. It was by Cairnrock Fully Loaded and out of a home-bred ewe by Boyo Douglas.

Blue Texel in-lamb shearlings sold to 950gns for Silver Birch Jazzy from Elsa McKechnie, Skipton. Bred from a Turbo Blue female and sired by Silver Birch Hooley, it sold to the Bal family, Tewkesbury, served to Sunnybank Freddy.

At 750gns was Eastbury Jewl, a Cleenagh Ginger Bread Man daughter from Dave and Kathryn Thompson, Dorset. It sold to J.R. Blandford, Eastnor.

Averages:  2 aged ewes, £630; 15 shearling ewes, £579.75; 18 ewe lambs, £426.63.

Another win for Anderson family

FOR the fourth year in a row, Messrs Anderson, Galston, claimed the champion ticket at the Christmas show and sale at Lanark.

Leading the way this year was a pen of 52kg Beltex which sold to J. and H. Cairns Butchers, Law, and J. Chapman Butchers, Wishaw, for £300 apiece (659p/kg).

Messrs Anderson also picked up the reserve ticket with a pen of 44kg Beltex lambs that sold to Yorkshire Halal Meat Supplier, Ossett, for £290/head.

The entry of cast sheep peaked at £300 for a Suffolk ram from Messrs Wight, Biggar.

Limousins headed up the prime cattle at 445p/kg for a heifer from Brockwoodlees, Canonbie, with heifers also making £2,653 from Mid Shawtonhill, Strathaven. Bullocks hit 390p/kg from Hill Farm, Strathaven, and £2,826 from Wintermuir Farm, Biggar.

Thornhill dairy dispersal reaches £3,255

A SECOND calver headed up the dispersal of dairy cattle for the Selway family, Dorset, which was held at Sedgemoor.

Despite having no records or breeding behind, the second calver sold for the top price of £3,255.

Next best at £2,992.50 was an August-calved heifer by Peak Altagaines, which sold yielding 38.9kg.

Close behind at £2,940 were three entries: a September-calved cow named Riverbride Tenday Regis giving 38.7kg; a third calver named Hadlow Impression Gina, which was yielding 41.9kg; and a May-calved heifer by Boghill Glamour Santos, which was giving 39.4kg.

Trade was strong for quality and milk, with cows in their seventh lactation realising £2,100 as the sale averaged £2,016.54.

Continued support from MacKay's Hotel at Caithness

THE champion at the Christmas show and sale at Caithness sold to MacKay's Hotel in Wick for the 26th consecutive year.

This was a 708kg Limousin cross bullock from Ron Mackay, Wick, which was tapped out by judge Ewan Hutcheson and went on to sell for £5,000.

In reserve was a Charolais cross heifer from James Gunn, Wick, that weighed 663kg and sold to A. Ritchie, Whitecairns, for £3,700.

Young Farmers champion was a 629kg Limousin cross heifer from Ross Campbell, Thurso, which sold for £3,500 to Puldagon Farm Show and Restaurant, Wick.

Best native was a 698kg Aberdeen-Angus from William Barnetson and Son, Watten, which sold to John M. Munro for £2,900.

MacKay's Hotel also supported the lamb section and bought the champion pair for £500/head. This was a pair of 43.5kg continentals from Callum Angus, Thurso.

Reserve ticket went to a 54kg pair of continentals from Messrs Swanson, Castletown, which sold for £250/head.

Leading the Young Farmers section was a pair of 52kg continentals from Neve Sutherland, Harpsdale, that made £280/head to Puldagon. Reserve was a 46kg pair of continentals from Hannah Sutherland, Latheron, which sold to John M. Munro for £200/head.

Charity heifer raises £5,000

A HEIFER sold to raise money for charity topped the dairy offering at Penrith when the month-calved Holstein Friesian from Messrs Turnbull, Plumpton, initially sold for £3,900.

Yielding 36 litres, further donations took the total to £5,000 raised for MND Association.

The overall champion and reserve entries both realised £3,400. First up was the Holstein Friesian champion from first time vendors Skirwith Hall Farms, Penrith. It sold to the judge, T. and M.D. Beaty, Egremont, 32 days calved and giving 32 litres.

Reserve supreme was a Dairy Shorthorn heifer from P. and C.A. Harrison, Northumberland, that was giving 36 litres since calving four weeks prior. It sold to H. and E.M. Hunter and Son, Penrith.

British Friesians hit £3,300 for a second calver yielding 34 litres from R.W. and J. Bell, Wigton, which sold to W.H. Brass, Penrith.

In-calf heifers and dry cows sold to £2,050 for Holsteins due in January from D.W. Cannon and Son, Kirkby Thore.

New dairy record set at Bentham

LEADING the prizes and setting a new mart record at the Bentham Christmas show and sale of dairy cattle was the champion, a second-calver from Robert, John and Natalie Walker, Killington.

Calved fresh 21 days prior and yielding 51 litres, it surpassed the previous £4,200 record, also set by the Walkers, when it sold for £4,350 to James and Rachael Batty, Kendal.

In reserve was a red third-calver from the same class, from Alan and Colin Price, Clapham, which sold to one of the judges, Martyn Dixon, Penrith, for £3,100.

Second top price at £3,950 was a heifer from Dave Barton, Kirkby Lonsdale, while Peter Swindlehurst, Unbarrow, sold a second-calver for £3,350.

Dunlops lead at Longtown

THERE were 41 pens of prime lambs presented at the Longtown Christmas show and sale, where the champion ticket went to a pen of five Beltex, from Messrs Dunlop, Biggar.

Weighing in at 52kg, they went on to sell for £320 or 615p/kg.

In reserve was a pair of Beltex, from Messrs Line, Argyll, which realised £250 or 568p/kg, selling to Billy Kirkup, Kirkup Butchers, Longtown.

Ewes peaked at £440 for the champion pen, pure Texels, from Messrs Arnott, Kelso, whose run of 28 pure Texels averaged £363.

The reserve pen from Messrs Beard, Carlisle, was also Texels that made £350.

Braes of Enzi beat all at Dingwall 

DOUBLE celebrations for Messrs Fettes, Braes of Enzie, Buckie, as they claimed the champion and reserve tickets, as well as the top prices at the Christmas show and sale at Dingwall.

Top ticket went to a 645kg Limousin cross heifer which realised 700p p/kg or £4,515, when sold to the judge, Ewen Macdonald, of John M Munro Butchers, Dingwall.

Mr Macdonald also bought the reserve, a 635kg Limousin bullock from the same home for 500p/kg or £3,175.

The native champion, a 645kg Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Sarah Balfour, Forgie, also sold to Mr Macdonald, this time for 445p/kg or £2,870.

Similarly, the champion pair of lambs from Messrs Sutherland, Sibmister, and Stainland Farms, Caithness, topped the lamb section. The 45kg Beltex duo sold to Fraser Brothers Butchers, Dingwall, for £200 or 444p/kg.

Reserve was a pair of 51kg Texels from Georgia Munro, Tain, that realised £165.

Milkers average £2,519 at Market Drayton

A SECOND-calver from Subbs Partners, Whitgreave, topped the Chistmas show and sale at Market Drayton when it sold for £4,350.

The champion, as picked out by Joel and Emma Redfern, was a pedigree heifer from C. Whitticase and Son, St Martins, which realised £4,300. Messrs Whitticase sold others at £3,920 to average £3,493 for four.

R.A. Brown, Worcester, had the reserve champion, a pedigree second-calver which made £4,000.

Second calvers from D. and S.C. Sutton, Crewe, sold to £3,650.

A Dairy Shorthorn heifer from M. Tidmarsh sold for £2,000 and a Jersey second-calver from A. Webb made £1,400. A British Friesian in-calf heifer sold for £1,750 and a heifer calf for £480.

Averages: 20 fresh cows, £2,576; 45 fresh heifers, £2,494.

Brankleys' hogs hit the headlines at Hull

BACKING his decision at Hull's Christmas show and sale, judge Richard Liversidge bought his champion pen of pigs, 109.5kg hoggs from Messrs Brankley, Welwick, which realised 214p/kg or £263.20.

The reserve pen from Messrs Webb and Goddard, Cherry Burton, realised 220p/kg.

Taking the lamb championship was a pen of Texels from N. Harland, Alkborough, which sold to the judge, Richard Coulson, on behalf of G. Howsam, Stickford, for 389p/kg or £212.

The same buyer bought the reserve pen from F.M. Richardson and J.M. Clubley, Bewholme, for 352p/kg or £183.

The champion pen of ewes, Texels from E. Brown and S. Suddaby, Bempton, sold to G. Howsam for £188.

A Limousin bullock weighing 548kg, from Dom Gooch, Roos, claimed the champion ticket and topped the trade at 470p/kg or £2,575.60 when sold to Parkin Family Butchers, Howden.

Reserve was a 630kg Limousin heifer from C.F. Buckton and Son, Rise, that also sold to Parkin Family Butchers, this time for 436p/kg or £2,746.80.
