North Country Cheviot rams to £8,000 at Lockerbie

The sale of North Country Cheviot rams at Lockerbie topped at £8,000 three times. The first at this money was a son of Philiphaugh Broadsword from Scott Davies' Synton flock, Selkirk, which sold to Messrs Webster, Ashbourne.

The other ram to make £8,000 was Allanshaws Five Star by Gilston Don Carlo, which had been first prize shearling at the Border Union Show. Consigned by James Runciman, Galashiels, it sold in a two-way split to Messrs Mair, Turriff, and Messrs Sleigh, Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire.

The final ram at £8,000 was another from the same home, Allanshaws Flyer by Wandylaw Belter, which had won first prize shearling at Haddington Show. The buyer was Messrs Heads, Fenwick, Ayrshire. Messrs Runicman had the leading average of £3,600 for 12 rams sold.

Philiphaugh Estates, Selkirk, sold two rams at £7,000 apiece, Philiphaugh Fireball and Philiphaugh Firestarter, both by Allanshaws Destiny, which sold to Messrs Baillie, Tankerness, Orkney, and Messrs Graham, Lerwick, Shetland, respectively.

Females topped at £1,150 for a shearling gimmer from Messrs Gall, which sold to Messrs Beech, Burnaston, followed by two gimmers from Messrs Matthewson, Pathhead, Midlothian, which made £950/head to Messrs Wilkinson, Wigton.

Averages - 215 rams, £1,501.86 (+£173.96 on 2024); 49 ewes, £263.75 (+£65.57); 223 shearling gimmers, £450.68 (+£136.13); 94 ewe lambs, £349.17 (+£87.67).

Gisburn Dairies top at £4,500

The 95 head in Gisburn's dairy sale saw a top price of £4,500 with another seven at £4,000 or more.

A Rager-Red daughter from the Bowlandview Ruth family was the sale leader for J. and I. Garth, Great Eccleston. Close behind on £4,300 were entries from the Copdon and Hollinshall herds. G.D. Donkin, Blackburn, sold his Soureth Conrad heifer from the Copdon Flower family, while R.C. and S.W. Beecroft, Harrogate, made the same price for a Pine-Tree-I Pursuit heifer. G.B. Moorhouse, Skipton, had a run of four topping at £4,250 for Aireburn Raven Sher.

The pedigree cow trade reached £3,750 for a Nortonhill R2 D2 second calver in the Robanne Sherbet family from G.W. and M. Coates and Son, Bradford.

The non-pedigree section topped at £4,300 for one of three heifers from D.A. Wilcock, Blackrod.  

Averages - Pedigree newly-calved heifers, £3,327; pedigree newly-calved cows, £3,025; non-pedigree newly-calved heifers, £2,715; non-pedigree newly-calved cows, £3,310; in-calf heifers £2,408; cross-bred fresh heifers £2,160; pedigree bulling heifers £1,105.

Strong trade at Kirkblythe dispersal

The two-day dispersal of the Kirkblythe herd for Philip and Debbie Kirkham, who are retiring from dairy farming, on-farm near Solihull saw more than 800 head of pedigree Holsteins go under the hammer.

Trade peaked at 4,300gns for Kirkblythe Pep Dolly, which had given more than 10,000kg in its second lactation. The buyer was John Bayley, Nuneaton, who bought another six cows at more than 3,000gns/head.

Phil Manning, Shropshire, bought members of the Dolly family at 4,050gns.

Served heifers sold to 3,050gns and 3,000gns, given by James Bunting, Derbyshire, for members of the Dolly family.

Volume buyers were Tack Farms, Bromyard (64 head); Cartledge Agri, Shepton Mallet, (63 head) and Thomasson Farms, Nantwich, Cheshire (57 head). Martin Evans Farming, Oswestry, bought more than 100 served and maiden heifers for the Priddbwll herd on the Shropshire/Welsh border.

Averages - 440 cows and calved heifers (including all faults), £2,264.18; 138 served heifers, £2,021.93; 171 maiden heifers, £1,138,24; 85 A lot heifer calves born 2025, £545-63; 4 bulls, £1,837.50; 838 head, £1,818.18.

Ram lambs lead Border Leicester sale

The sale of Border Leicester sheep at Lanark peaked at £4,500 for a ram lamb consigned by Messrs Hamilton, Silvermuir, Lanark. By Lyham Denman and out of a homebred ewe by Alticane Authority, it sold jointly to David and Ian Walker, Alticane, Girvan, and Jack Lamb, Boreland flock, Ayrshire.

Next at £3,400 was another ram lamb from Tom and Andrew Tennant's Westforth flock, Selkirk, which was by Alticane Churchill. The buyer was Ellie Stokeld, Middlesbrough.

Duncan Whyte, Glasgow, then took £3,000 for his ram lamb, a son of Robinstown Irish Rover, which went to a Caithness buyer.

Females topped at £2,200 for a ewe lamb from John Barrowman's Knockglass flock, Stranraer. The daughter of Westforth Braveheart out of a Kingfisher Klondike-sired home-bred daughter sold jointly to Messrs Tennant and Robbie Morton, Stobilee, Lanark.

Averages - 2 aged ewes, £750; 17 gimmers, £661.76; 20 ewe lambs, £532.50; 1 aged ram, £300; 2 shearling rams, £1,175; 65 ram lambs, £895.38; 107 overall, £895.38 – 87% clearance.

Mule gimmer lambs sell to £880/head in Bentham

At the Farmers Guardian-supported annual show and sale of gimmer lambs at Bentham, John Ackerley from Brampton and Jonjo Morris from Yelvertoft judged the Mules, awarding the championship to a pen from Jackson Partnership, Bentham, which topped the sale at £880/head.

The class for a single gimmer lamb was won by H.W. and G. White, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, from their top pen, which realised £300/head.

Tupping lambs sold between £240-£280, with prize-winners selling for more than £300.

Running lambs were down on the year, with better types selling between £150-£160 and a cut below at £120-£140, with only a few pens at £100-£115. North of England Mule Sheep Association (NEMSA) lambs averaged £160.05, up £2.79/head on the year.

In the Masham section, judges Gareth Hutchins, Launceston, and John Liddle, Stainburn, awarded top honours to Mark and Jack Fawcett, Burton in Lonsdale, who sold the pen for £340 to Messrs Gibson and Berry, Endmoor.

Derek Harker, Middlesmoor, sold his second prize pen at £205/head to Messrs Douthwaite, Kirkby Overblow. The third prize pen from W. and R. Verity, Middlesmoor, sold for £260/head to David Buck, Barnard Castle. The majority of lambs sold from £155-£175 with only a few pens at £120 or less. 

Cheviot Mules topped at £260/head for the first prize pen from W.M. and E. Dugdale, Giggleswick, which sold to R. and C.W. Battersby, Lincolnshire. P.R. Beresford, Hawes, took second prize and sold at £225/head. A consignment from A. Carr, Bentham, had the top average of £218.28, including the third prize pen at £250. S.R. and P.A. Thompson, Sedbergh, sold 351 lambs to average £181.78, including plenty of running lambs in the £170s.

In the Dales Mule section, judges David James, Hampshire, and Robert Rowland, Hope Valley, awarded the red rosette to Messrs Capstick, Ingleton, with the pen later selling at £210/head. Top pens sold between £170-£190, with the next draw at £148-£168 and smaller lambs at £138-£145.

Lurg flock leads Beltex trade at Lanark

Topping the sale of Beltex sheep on behalf of Beltex Scotland at Lanark at 6,000gns was Lurg Lover Boy, a ram lamb which was a first prize winner at the Scottish National Show and also the reserve champion in the pre-sale show from Miller Farmers, Inverurie.

By Mellor Vale King Kong out of Lurg Honour, it sold to Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall flock, Biggar, and Messrs Wainwright, Todhall flock, Cupar.

Messrs Taylor then topped the shearling ram trade at 5,200gns for Heatheryhall Kryptonite,

A son of Todhall Hercules which joined the Walkerdyke flock of David Snr and David Jnr Cunningham, Strathaven.

The overall champion, Whindyke Kebab King consigned from Alister Meikle, Symington, realised 4,500gns.

The shearling, by Stonehills Herbert, sold to the judge, Iain Struthers, Carluke, and Jamie Gibson, Forth.

The section champion, Kenny's Kaboon, a gimmer by Todhall Hercules from Kenny O'Connor, Carstairs Junction, topped the females at 1,700gns selling to Messrs Taylor.

Leading the Padkin dispersal on behalf of Alistair and Wendy Padkin, Thornhill, were two gimmers at 2,800gns/head.

The first was Padkin Kerry, a daughter of Aviemore Furore 2 which sold to Messrs Wattie, Alford. The other was Padkin Kerria by the same sire which went to Messrs Gibson

Averages: 151 shearling rams, £943.26; 11 ram lambs, £1,517.73; 12 gimmers, £809.38; 6 Padkin dispersal - 6 aged flock ewes, £840; 4 gimmers, £1,798.13; 5 ewe lambs, £388.50; Cockrane dispersal – 9 gimmers, £612.50; 198 head overall, £952.15.

British Whites sell to 3,700gns

A new British White breed record was set at the traditional and native breed show and sale at Melton Mowbray.

The pedigree in-calf heifer, Alcroft Beetle, from F.W. Cook and Son, Cambridge, was tapped out as supreme champion before selling for 3,700gns.

In the sheep section, the East Dean flock of Southdowns, East Sussex, led the trade at 1,700gns with a shearling ewe which sold to the Yester Estate, Gifford.

At 1,300gns was Fulfen Georgia, Meadow Hailey, a shearling ewe from Emily Yates, Lichfield.

The overall Norfolk Horn male champion made 1,000gns. This was Osier Ernest, a shearling ram from S. Leithall, King's Lynn.

Border Leicesters sold to 900gns for a shearling ewe from B.C. Stanley's Melbournepark flock, Derbyshire.  

Border Leicester rams topped at 750gns for R. Banks' Catworth flock, Huntington.

Bids of 560gns and 500gns led the Greyfaced Dartmoor section for shearling ewes from S. Chadwick's Chadston flock, Burntheath.

A shearling tup, Fenix 2, from S. and K. Ireland, Goole, sold for 360gns.

A call of 360gns topped the Jacobs for Lickhill Mary, a ewe lamb from S. Carpenter, Stourport-on-Severn.

Kerry Hill shearling rams sold to 300gns for A. Fisher's Nidderdale flock, Harrogate, with shearling gimmers from Messrs Bostock, ??? selling to 290gns.

Lincoln Longwools topped at 350gns for Eastham Prince Charming, a ram from T. and R. Hardman, Eastham. Reserve inter-breed champion Belton Fern, a gimmer lamb from M. Coney, Bury St. Edmunds, sold for 300gns.

D.J. Parker and Bird, Chilton, sold Wensleydale shearling ewes to 380gns.

A bid of 210gns led the Ryelands for a shearling ram from J. Stone, Scoulton.

M.A. Elliott, Knaresborough, led a smaller entry of Teeswaters, selling ewe lambs to 250gns.

Llanwenog's peaked at 380gns for a shearling ewe from A. Hodges, Bicester.

Online sheepdogs peak at £8,700

Topping Skipton's online sale of working sheep dogs at £8,700 was Jay, a fully broken black and white 27-month-old son of Rob Hutchinson's Hendre Taff, from Brian Farrelly, Co Donegal, which went to a Scottish buyer.

Mr Hutchinson had the next best price of £8,000 for the two-year-old bitch, Tanhill Lassie, also by Henre Taff, which had been mated to Sion Morgan's Moss. The buyer was Jo De Meyst, Belgium.

John Wheaton, Port Talbot, sold his February 2023-born black and white dog, Zac, by Glencregg Silver, for £4,800 to S. Farthing, Pontardawe.

Part-broken dogs sold to £4,000 for a 14-month-old bitch, Misty, from Liam Ward, Co Donegal, which sold to Cerys Millichap, Mid-Glamorgan.

Heading the unbroken section at £2,600 was Nataly Matthews, Gwent, with her seven-month-old black and white bitch, Jacobsdale Maid, which went to Huw Francis, Llanflyllin.

Averages: Broken section – registered dogs, £5,600; registered bitches, £3,220; part-broken – registered dogs, £1,008; registered bitches, £2,156.

Bluefaced Leicester averages up at Castle Douglas

Numbers were slightly down, but averages up at the sale of Bluefaced Leicesters at Castle Douglas which had a 100% clearance.

Top price was £3,500 for the winning ram lamb and reserve champion from Andrew McQuistin's Barnshangan flock, Newton Stewart. By G034 Midlock out of a homebred ewe, it sold to Ardoch Farm, Castle Douglas.

Next at £3,000 was the second prize-winning shearling ram by Finniness R014 from S. Hamilton's Cairn Smiddy flock, Sanquhar, which was knocked down to D.G. and J.D. Walker, Sanquhar.

W. Lockhart, Kirkcudbright, sold a shearling ram, homebred on both sides, from his Culdoach flock for £2,600.

The pre-sale show champion was a shearling ram by S002 Hewgill from W. Lockhart and Son's Laggan Park flock, Thornill which sold to the judge, Sandy Craig, Walton Park, for £2,000.

Averages – 69 shearling rams, £1,426.08 (+£342.28 on 2024); 6 ram lambs, £1,533.33 (+£626.19).

In-calf heifer tops Beef Shorthorn sale at Longtown

The show and sale of Beef Shorthorn females at Longtown topped at 4,200gns for Shawhill WD Tamara, the winning in-calf heifer from Thomson, Roddick and Lawrie, Lockerbie. The Shawhill Henderson daughter out of an Isle of Man-bred Faradale cow sold to Messrs Darnbrook, Bailey.

The same vendors had the pre-sale show champion, Shawhill Verity, an unserved heifer by Sowerby Parks Richard, which sold for 3,800gns to I. and J. Park, Fort William, and they also sold another unserved Broadhooks heifer for 3,800gns to M. Hodgson, Carleton.

First prize in the calf at foot section went to Franzeal Farming, Castle Douglas, for Franzeal Samantha by Fearn Wyvis with a Castlemount Kubota bull calf at foot and in-calf to the same bull, which sold for 3,400gns.

Averages: Cows and heifers with calves at foot, £3,185; in-calf heifers, £3,517; unserved heifers, £2,378.

Loxley flock leads at Skipton Texels

A sale-topping 3,000gns for a shearling ram and 2,500gns for the supreme champion ewe lamb were among the highlights at the Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders' show and sale at Skipton.

The sale topper was Loxley Hercules, a Mullan Foxtrot son out of a New View Buster-bred ewe from John North, Giggleswick, which sold to James Simpson, Woodliffe flock, Great Givendale.

For the second year running, the supreme championship went to Steven Nesbitt's Alwent flock, exhibiting alongside joint vendor Michael Dent.
This year's champion, a full sister to last year's winner, is by Strathbogie Yes Sir and out of a dam by Usk Vale Crackerjack. It sold to the Teward family, Staindrop. The sale marked the start of Mr Nesbitt's dispersal, as he is retiring from livestock farming due to ill health.

Shearling gimmers topped at 1,800gns for the reserve female champion by Coach House Gambler from Spyros Spyrou's Gib Farm flock, Hebden Bridge. The buyer was H. Chapman and Son, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Martin Furness, Westgate flock, Wormhill, Buxton, sold shearling rams by Preenbank Emrys to 2,800gns and 2,400gns. Andrew Pawson, trading as D. Pawson and Sons, Yellow Hill flock, Blackburn, sold Mershott Fagin sons at 2,600gns and 2,500gns.  

The male champion and reserve supreme was the first prize ram lamb from Charles and Rachel Ashbridge, Hambleton flock, Thirsk. Their Hambleton I'm The One by Uppermill Gazza sold for a section top of 2,500gns to W.J. and V.J. Case, Ulverston.

Averages - Shearling ewes, £509; ewe lambs, £589; aged rams, £761, shearling rams, £1,146; ram lambs, £613.

Balwens sell to 700gns

The top price of 700gns at the Balwen sale at Monmouth Livestock Centre went to the Groucott family, Abergavenny, with their yearling ram, which had been breed champion at Usk Show. It was knocked down to Cari Haf Harries, Llanddeusant.

Next, at 540gns, was the pre-sale male and overall champion from D.R.L. Williams, Talley, Carmarthenshire, which had been male champion at this year's Royal Welsh Show. The buyer was Betsan Jones, Nantgaredig.

Young member Zahvia Paewai Jones, Capel Isaac, sold her yearling ram at 500gns to Carys Morgan, Llanfynydd.

Dylan Jones, Betws-y-Coed, topped the aged rams by selling his three-year old ram for 480gns to Helen Arnold, Chepstow.

Females topped at 500gns for the first prize ewe lamb and reserve female champion from Miss Paewai-Jones. It sold to Betsan Jones, who also paid 360gns – the top yearling ewe price – for one from the same home.

The female champion from Huw and Mair Williams, Porthyrhyd, sold for 340gns to Will Rees, Tycroes, Carmarthenshire.  

Averages: 24 aged ewes, £111.78; 22 yearling ewes, £177.55; 43 ewe lambs, £148.83; 9 aged rams, £242.81; 9 yearling rams, £310.33; 10 ram lambs, £249.90

High of 6,200gns at Greengrass dispersal

The dispersal of the Greengrass pedigree Holstein herd at Carlisle on behalf of A.D. Mares, Darwen, topped at 6,200gns for the Red and White in-calf heifer, Greengrass Apex Jodie Red.
The daughter of Peak Apex, backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams from the Jodie family, carried a service to Bomaz Rimrock Red. The buyer was Jack Wilson for the Lightning herd, Appleby.

Two animals sold for 5,000gns. The first was Greengrass Shanrock Lambda June, a June-born daughter of Delta-Lambda and a maternal descendant of Loyalyn Goldwyn June EX97-7E. It sold to Holehouse Farms, Kilbirnie, and Boclair Holsteins, Glasgow.

Also selling for 5,000gns was the third-lactation Greengrass Integral Snakebite Red EX91, a Blondin Integral daughter from the deep Supra family, which sold to Messrs Bailey, Scarborough.

Averages - 42 cows in-milk, £2,573.75; 9 heifers in-milk, £2,829.16; 43 in-calf heifers, £2,505.34; 22 bulling heifers, £1,775.45; 40 heifer calves, £1,879.50.
