Royal Highland Show: Commercial sheep champions claim supreme sheep title

The culmination of judging of more than 1,2000 sheep from 27 breeds resulted in the top spot going to the outfit of a ewe and two lambs from Andrew Baillie and family, Carstairs.

The three-crop ewe is by the Beltex sire, Wannops Firecracker out of a Texel ewe, and the lambs were by the home-bred Beltex ram, Callacrag Krist.

The judge, Kenny Sutherland, said his champions caught his eye as soon as they came into the ring as it was a hard working ewe, in great condition with a great pair of lambs.

Standing reserve was the traditional Bluefaced Leicester champion from Alan McClymont and sons, Sam and Oli's Kirkstead flock, Yarrow, giving them their sixth breed championship at the show. The three-crop ewe by Ashes L1 was a winner at the show as a ewe lamb and was part of the winning team at the Penrith progeny show last year.

Second reserve, on its first outing, went to the Suffolk champion, a home-bred shearling gimmer from James Innes's Strathbogie flock, Huntly, which is by his stock ram, Rempstone Gambler which also won its class at the show.

Also making the final line up was the Dutch Spotted champion, Rigghead Hottie, a home-bred shearling gimmer by the imported ram, The Dutchman out of the 2023 triple crown winner Barquhill Faith from Hannah Jackson, Maulscastle.

Also there was the Beltex champion, Lurg Hiccup, the winning aged ewe from Alan Miller, Inverurie. By Vicky's Gladiator out of the Highland Showcase champion, Lurg Fern, it has already twice been Scottish national champion. Mr Miller also took the reserve female championship with the shearling gimmer, Lurg Killing It and the male championship with Lurg Knock On.

Making the final line up in the non-MV accredited ring was the North County Cheviot champion, a home-bred shearling gimmer by Soutar Cannonball from N.D. Campbell and Sons' Bardnaclavan flock, Thurso.

Another was the Blackface champion, a one-crop ewe from W. Ramsay and Son's Milnbank flock, Dalry. The daughter of a 30,000gns Elmscleugh out of a home-bred ewe was also breed champion and one of the inter-breed winning pair at the show last year.

Completing the final line up was the Bluefaced Leicester crossing type champion, a shearling gimmer by S36 Midlock from John and Archie MacGregor's Allanfauld flock, Kilsyth, who were exhibiting in the Bluefaced Leicester section only for the second time.
