Auction mart sales round-up: Beltex tops Summer Sizzlers; Winnington dispersal to 14,000gns; store cattle to £2,745 and steady demand for dairy

Beltex tops sizzlers online bidding

A £6,000 bid led Carlisle's Summer Sizzlers online sale, which attracted more than 17,000 views across two days.

J. Ferguson, Co Down, had the top bid for their Beltex ewe lamb, Vicky's Little Lady. A Swffryd Express daughter, out of Vicky's Jezzabell, it sold to Messrs Johnston, Co Tyrone.

C. Dodd, Dumfriesshire, took a £4,400 bid for their Dutch Spotted ram lamb, Hazelberry Iron Man. This one by Drumhirk Decider, out of Hazelberry Felicia, is a full brother to the 18,000gns Hazelberry Heaven and sold to Messrs Coulhon, Co Tyrone.

A £1,800 bid secured a Texel ewe lamb by the 32,000gns Hexel Fan Club from G. Beacom, Co Fermanagh. Out of a Lakeview ewe, it went home with Messrs Porter, Co Donegal.

The Beltex shearling gimmer, Woodies Kinda Hot, from Stuart Wood, Aberdeenshire, sold for £1,500. This son of the 30,000gns Finders Keepers sold to Messrs Armistead.

Another Hazelberry Dutch Spotted secured a £1,400 bid for Messrs Dodd. The ewe lamb, Hazelberry Ivy by Diamond Freaky Freddie, sold to Messrs Thompson, Yeovil. A. Miller, Aberdeenshire, also took £1,400 for their Beltex shearling gimmer, Lurg Katch Him. This one by Smart Ass Jackpot, out of Scottish National winner Lurg Hickup, sold to Messrs Harrison, Lanark.

Stock bull tops Winnington dispersal at 14,000gns

A 14,000gns bid led the Winnington dispersal of pedigree Limousin cattle, held at Welshpool on behalf of John S. Vance and Son, Minsterley, Shropshire, with three lots making five figure prices.

Sale leader at 14,000gns was Mammouth, one of four stock bulls catalogued. Backed by French genetics, Mammouth is a Celestin son out of Estonie and was bred by Earl Champeval J. Pierre, La Porte. It sold to High Ash Estates, Cheshire.

Another French-bred stock bull, Nathan, made 10,000gns. This one bred by Anthony Guillot-Patreau is by Jacot, out of Jasmine, and sold to Messrs Wight and Sons, Melrose.

Another 10,000gns bid secured third-calver Winnington Petunia for Messrs Johnson, Lutterworth. By Sibbesfield Lascard, this one is out of Winnington Maize.

Messrs Lloyd-Jones, Gwynedd, paid 8,000gns for stock bull Absolute Tonka, a Dinmore Ombudsman son bought with its dam Absolute Noisette out of the Absolute dispersal.

At 7,200gns was Winnington Thatch, a first-calver by Mereside Hallmark which sold to Messrs Johnson.

The same buyer also paid 6,800gns for Garmon Siola, a second-calver by Eniver Monk bred by S. Lloyd Jones, Pwllhel.

Another 6,800gns bid secured Absolute Noisette for Messrs Shore, Chester. This fifth-calver bred by Richard Bartle, Hereford, is by Tyddyn Mel.

Averages: 52 cows/heifers with calves, £5,510.48; 8 in-calf cows/heifers, £3,990; 33 maiden heifers, £3,541.36; 3 stock bulls, £11,200

 Longtown breeding cattle to 5,800gns

The June sale of beef breeding cattle at Longtown topped at 5,800gns for a three year-old Aberdeen-Angus bull from J.F. and J.K. Hayward, Colwell, bought by Messrs Strawhorn, Lockerbie.

The day included a sale pedigree Beef Shorthorns, supported by the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society, which saw a top of 4,000gns for the only bull forward, Shawhill Tetrarch, from Thomson, Roddick and Laurie, Dumfriesshire. This 20 month-old son of Shawhill Radar went to T.A. and J. Swinbank for their Darlington based Limelane herd.

Shorthorn cows with calves at foot topped at 3,600gns for Coxhill Blythesome. By Fearn Duke, this 2016-born cow with bull calf at foot from Franzeal Farming, Lauriston, sold to G.W. Dent, Kaberfold.

Jack Oliver sold an Offthewall Victoria, a heifer with bull calf at foot at 3,600gns to Messrs Copeland, Nether Collinhurst. Cows and heifers with calves at foot averaged £3,020 overall.

In-calf heifers sold to 3,000gns for Pikestone Irania Twinkle, a Derwentwood Kinsman daughter from C. and J. C. Stephenson, Bishop Auckland, which was bought by M. Hodgson, Holmrook.

The same buyer also paid 3,000gns, topping the Beef Shorthorn maiden heifers, for Batch Cowslip Troublemaker from Abbey MacLean, Kelso.

In the main sale section, commercial beef cows and heifers with calves made £3,100 three times for Galloway cross Shorthorn heifers with Shorthorn calves at foot from R. and. M. MacKintosh. Others from the same home sold to £3,000, while H.W. Sloan, Rigghead sold Shorthorn heifers with calves at £3,000 twice.

Stores to £2,745 at Penrith

At Penrith's fortnightly sale of store cattle and feeding bulls, some cattle were dearer on the

fortnight with buyers forward and keen to bid.

Topping at £2,745 was a Charolais cross heifer from M.T.P and S.D. Wills, Fawcett Park, who sold 10 to average £2,497.

At £2,715 was a 25-month-old British Blue bullock from J.G. and R.W. Nevinson and Son, Workignton. The same home also sold an Aberdeen-Angus bullock to £2,635, with their consignment of three averaging £2,595.

A run of 14-16 month-old cattle from M. Bindloss and Son, Shap Abbey, topped at £2,515 for a British Blue cross heifer, with their consignment of 26 going on to average £2,091.

A small offering of bulls was forward, selling to a top of £1,975 for a British Blue, again from Messrs Bindloss.

 Milkers average £2,261 in Hawksland dispersal

Trade at the Hawksland Holstein Friesian dispersal, held on behalf of the King family, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, at Carlisle reached 4,000gns with the overall average for milkers coming to £2,261.

Topping the sale at 4,000gns was a heifer in-milk by Jeanjo Alex. Fresh in February and giving almost 30kg a day, it was secured by Messrs Gatherer, Cumnock.

The same buyers bought another similar aged Jeanjo Alex daughter at 3,100gns, with milking heifers averaging £2,687 overall.

At 2,900gns was the top price cow in-milk, a fresh second calver by FB 786 Skywalker Stark, also purchased by Messrs Gatherer.

In-calf heifers sold to 2,900gns for an August 2023-born heifer, due in July to Bomaz Getaway. It sold to Messrs Whitfield, Silloth, Wigton.

Bulling and heifer calves sold to 1,500gns, with a February 2024-born ABS Sassafras daughter selling to Messrs Eilbeck, Aspatria, Wigton.

Another June 2024-born Sassafras daughter, also made 1,500gns selling to Messrs Haddow, Lesmahagow, Lanark.

Averages: 33 cows in-milk, £2,206.59; 11 heifers in-milk, £2,687.04; 23 dry cows, £2,278.04; 5 faulted cows, £1,606.50; 6 in-calf heifers, £2,388.75; 4 short-bred heifers, £1,561.88; 16 bulling heifers,      £1,312.50; 13 heifer calves, £1,332.69.

Market Drayton dairy to £3,850

M. Weaver, Stone, led the heifer and cow trade at Market Drayton's dairy sale.

Leading the bidding at £3,850 was a fresh heifer, with a second calver from the same home not far behind at £3,520 with eight lots in total selling for more than £3,000.

O.C. Whittaker and Sons, Knutsford, sold heifers to £3,450, with R.D.I. and H. Roberts, Llandegla, selling to £3,080 and £3,000. D. and E. Monk, Ormskirk, sold to £3,020 and £3,000 and N. Stubbs, Hilderstone to £3,020.

In-calf heifers due next month to the Longhorn bull sold to £3,050 and £2,650.

Dairy Shorthorn calved heifers sold to £2,000 and £1,950.

Averages (all breeds and faults): 30 fresh cows, £2,525; 4 fresh cows, £2,180; 4 in-calf heifers,  £2,250.

Goldie heifer claims Craven Dairy title and £2550 top call

Skipton's mid-June fortnightly dairy auction saw a £2,550 top call for the day's champion, Wiskemanor Radar Hazel, from T.D, Goldie, Northallerton. A May-calved daughter of GDR-Kings Radar, Hazel sold giving 30kg to William and Michael Oldfield's Whinhill herd, Gisburn.

Harry Bolderston, Norfolk, sold his pedigree Ayrshire heifer, Brieryside Fantasy Patsy, at £1,850. It sold four weeks fresh and giving 28kg to John Harry Hitchen, Luddenfoot.

Making £1,500 was the day's reserve champion from father and son Stephen and Jack Swales, Hutton Rudby, with a homebred Applejax daughter, Tofthill Applejax Yeti. Two weeks fresh giving 37kg, it also sold to Messrs Oldfield.

Quality spring lambs sell well

Quality spring lambs at Ludlow sold well with best quality butchers lambs topping at 419ppk, to include several pens making more than 400ppk. Export lambs sold from 355ppk to 375ppk with big lambs taking a significant jump, making from 340ppk to 350ppk. Small lambs again took a slight lift making from 350ppk to 380ppk depending on quality.

In the cull ewe section, there was a mixed show forward, with several plainer sorts on show. Better bred ewes were still selling well with strong Texels selling to £300 and other good continental ewes from £220 to £248. Strong Suffolk cross ewes made between £170-£195. Heavy Mules saw a rise, with some making more than £180. Middle sized ewes with cover sold between £130-£150. Plainest types made between £50-£80 and strong rams to £161.

Trade steady on the month for stirks and young stores

A total of 294 head were forward at Skipton's monthly auctions of stirks, calves and young cattle, with trade similar to the previous month and younger ones in particular attracting brisk bidding.

Leading the prices was a £1,720 bid for a suckler-bred Limousin heifer from Craig Schofield, Cheadle.

British Blue heifers topped at £1,480 for O.A. Goldthorpe, Sheffield, while Aberdeen- Angus made £1,200 for C.N. and S.A. Harrison, Skipton, with stronger 10-12 month-old Aberdeen- Angus' making between £1,100 and £1,200 and younger five to seven month-old heifers selling from £840 to £1,000.

Yearling dairy-bred British Blue heifers sold regularly at £1,200 to £1,330 with eight and nine month-old heifers reaching £1,100 to £1,180 and those around six months selling between £950 to £1,080.

Steers were also good to sell with Limousins reaching £1,680 from C. and J. Harrison, Winterburn, and Nick Parker and Amy Mountain, with a trio of Limousin steers from Terry Blackwell, Silsden, making the same money.

Plenty of yearling Aberdeen-Angus steers sold for between £1,300 and £1,500 with younger ones selling at £1,100 to £1,300.

British Blue steers sold to £1,480 from Catterton Road Farm Partnership, Tadcaster.

Black and white steers made to £1,180 from M.D. and H.E. Wallbank and Son, Embsay, with Herefords selling to £1,080 from Lea Partners, Sheffield.

Topping the bull stirks for a £1,590 bid for two Charolais bulls from Robert Falshaw, Gisburn, who also achieved the same price for a British Blue bull.
