Rachels herd dispersal tops at 13,000gns
A new centre record of 13,000gns and one of the biggest crowds seen at Darlington reflected the trade at the dispersal of the Rachels herd of pedigree Limousin cattle on behalf of Mark Woolhouse and his parents, Rachel and Derek, Driffield.
The dispersal was held on the same day as the mart's North East pedigree Limousin breeders club sale as well as a multi-breed cattle sale.
The day's top call of 13,000gns was for the 27-month-old bull Rachels Umbro, by Rachels Perseus and out of Rachels Izzy boasting both Lissett and Wilodge lines through its grandparents. It was knocked down to R.A. and S.L. Wearmouth, Stockton-on-Tees.

Cow and calf trade topped at 8,500gns for 2021-born Rachels Siete, while cows topped at 5,500gns for Rachels Prosecco, a 2019-born daughter of Lissett Madmax. It was sold due in July to Barrons Sammie.
Heifers from the herd twice peaked at 7,500gns, firstly for Rachels Venice and then for Rachels Veluptuous.
In the pedigree club sale, the top bid of 11,200gns went to Barrons Valour, a 14-month-old bull from Willie Barron, Burnhope. Valour is by last year's club sale champion, Wanthwaite Rolo, and out of Procters Rowen. Two bulls from Josh Knaggs' Jorica herd, Darlington, sold for 9,200gns and 9,000gns respectively, with bulls from the Cornsay herd of W. I. Suddes and Sons, Durham, selling to 9,000gns and 8,500gns.

In the multi-breed sale, a top call of 6,200gns was achieved for a two-year-old British Blue bull from Eileen Wilson, White Hills. The top call for a female went to an eight-year-old pedigree Aberdeen-Angus cow with a bull calf at foot from R.E. Dickson, Stubdale Farm, which sold for 3,700gns.

Mainstay Jan leads Dolgellau sheepdogs at £13,300
A top bid of £13,300 led Dolgellau's timed online sale of working sheepdogs for Mainstay Jan, a fully trained two-and-a-half-year-old bitch from Sion Morgan, Orton, Cumbria. By Brian Rees' Heyshaw Flick and out of Joe Silverthorne's Kate, by Floyd Farthings Jack, Jan found a new home in Germany.

A total of 192 working dogs sold in this May sale, to average £2,865 with a clearance rate of 77 per cent.
Myfarian Sam, a fully trained dog from Dewi Jenkins, Talybont, Ceredigion, sold for £12,600 and will be heading to a new home in Ireland.
Not far behind at £10,300 was Efail Jinny, a fully trained bitch from Iwan Rees, Upper Pentre, Rhayader, which sold to a Bradwel based buyer, with Mainstay Glen, a fully trained dog from Rory Owen, Llyswen, Brecon, making £9,700.
Ruby, a fully trained bitch from Danny Gallagher, Cumbria sold for £8,400.
In the Huntaway section, a bid of £6,400 led for Rhyader based Elis Rees' Flash, a fully trained dog by Elis Rees' imported dog Tone and out of Sion Morgan's imported bitch Bizz. It found a new home in Powys.
Topping the pup section at £6,000 was Ru, from David Evans, Llwynfedwen, Brecon. A five-month-old daughter of supreme champion Kemi Jack, it found a new home in the USA.

Auchensala and Absolute Spring Opportunity sale tops at 19,000gns
The Auchensala and Absolute Spring Opportunity sale at saw a top price of 19,000gns for a First Choice heifer selection from three pregnancies. Consigned by Tim Fitzmaurice, Co Kerry, the pregnancies are by Farnear Delta-Lambda and out of Kingsway Caught A Vibe VG87 and will be its first daughter sold outside Canada. The buyer was Big Apple Partners, Ireland.
Riverdane Holsteins, Middlewich, consigned Riverdane BD Lila Z, the first daughter of Riverdane Chief Lila Z EX97-2E SP LP50 to sell, which made 10,800gns to Messrs Lewis, Sandbach. By Blondin Direct, this October 2024-born heifer is out of the UK's youngest cow to ever score EX97.

Making 7, 000gns was Auchensala Ambrose Mecca Red from Ali Cook, Parkgate. The November 2024-born Ambrose daughter is out of Hodglynn Altitude Madison VG87 and goes back to the Royal Winter Fairy 2022 supreme champion Blondin RD Unstopabull Maple Red EX94. The buyer was Messrs Evans for the Heatherleigh herd, Shrewsbury.
Knowlesmere Jones Bullseye Bonsoir, a September-born daughter of MB-Luckylady Bullseye out of Knowlesmere Jones Dl Bonnie VG87 from Andrew and Jane Whittaker and Gary and Izzy Jones, Shrewsbury, sold for 6,000gns to the Watson family for their Muir herd, Mauchline, Ayrshire.

Poultry sale peaks at £1,450
Harrison and Hetherington's first ever online poultry sale held on behalf of Steve Dace of Cheshire Poultry who is retiring, topped at £1,450 for a pair of Sebastapol Curly Breasted geese followed by a Sebastapol Curly Breasted female at £900. Also making £900 was a trio of Buff Sebastapol Smooth Breasted geese.

Chickens sold to £700 for a trio of Blue Laced Wyandottes with another trio at £550 and a trio of Silver Laced Wyandottes at £500.
French Copper Black Maran cockerels sold to £500 and £490. Sebastol goslings sold to £650 and lots of Blue Laced, Gold Laced and Splash Blue Laced Wyandotte chicks sold to £400.

Luings top at 4,000gns at Dingwall
The show and sale of pedigree Luings at Dingwall was judged by Colin Little, East Bracklin, who awarded the Lady Anne Memorial Cup for the championship to the winning pair of pedigree bulling heifers from A.L. and A.C. McCall, Golspie, which sold for 4,000gns to T. Fox, St Johns Kirk.
Reserve champion went to the Orkney consignment of T. E. Lyth,Tankerness, whose pair sold for 3,700gns to the Thuster herd of Messrs Brims, Caithness.
Topping the bulls at 4,000gn for David MacLaughlin, Isle of Lewis, was a son of Nunnerie Young Gun which was knocked down to Messrs Sutherland, Strathnaver.

Pedigree in-calf cows sold to 2,500gns for Messrs Fanblair, Kiltarlity, selling to Ramsay Farming, Perthsire, and in-calf heifers to 2,800gns for Clachan Farm, Inverbroom, which went to A. Walker, Angus.
Sim/Luing bulling heifers topped at 2,600gns for Messrs Mccall, selling to Messrs Mowat, Halkirk, and Sim/Luing yearling heifers from the same home sold to 1,850gns to Messrs Wilson, Gollanfield.

Skipton Limousin Day peaks at 8,500gns
Topping Skipton's Craven Limousin Day with an 8,500gns bid was Tomshoice Usurper, the second prize intermediate bull from James and Sarah Cooper, Dacre. A November 2023-born AI son of Larry by the French-bred Correze, out of Tomschoice Polka, it sold to David Towler, Grindleton.

Selling for the day's second highest price of 7,500gns was the junior reserve male champion Oddacres Vernon from the Mason family, Embsay. The home-bred 14-month-old son of the French-bred Tabarly, out of Oddacres Silvie, sold to the Caton family, Weston.
Another from the same home, 13-month-old Oddacres Volt, made 6,200gns. Also by Tabarly, it sold to Brian and Anita Coates, Cowan Bridge.
Also selling for 6,200gns was the junior male champion and another from the Coopers, Tomschoice Valencia. The 16-month-old Gallaber Leo son was knocked down to Jeff Pickles, Chapel-le-Dale.
At 5,900gns was the supreme champion, Meadowrig United, from John Clayton's Bentleybrook herd, Wyke. By the Homebyres Iveson son, Homebyres Macadoo and out of Meadowrig Nina, it sold to G. and R. Bulmer and Sons, Wakefield.
Topping the female trade at 3,600gns was the female reserve champion from Charles Stanton's Whitewell herd, Cow Ark, Clitheroe. Whitewell Ultravixen by the Ampertaine Foreman son, Westpit Omaha, out of Procters Mfanita, sold to Richard and Charlotte Greenwood, Low Bradley.

Breeding sheep sell well at Penrith
There was a 100% clearance at the New Fair and Troutbeck show and sales of sheep with lambs at foot at Penrith, with most consigners up £10-15 on the year.
Topping the sale at £260 was J. Bland, Clea Hall, with a Blue Texel hogg lamb, which sold to T. L. Whiteford, Tercrosset.
Mule hoggs from Messrs Winter, Clickham, topped at £230 for a pen of hoggs with Suffolk lambs with their run averaging £199.27 for 250 sold.

Shearling ewes topped at £140/life for Mules with twin Suffolk lambs from T. W. Fawcett, Blencowe. A consignment from J. Swift, Dry Howe, averaged £102.17 for Cheviot draft ewes with Beltex cross lambs.
Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, sold 455 Swaledale full-mouthed ewes with Mule lambs, averaging £100, topping at £165 for a pen of five ewes with gimmer lambs bought by M. Crocker, Johnby. Leading in the averages at £113.11 was J. A. Alderson, Barras, with a run of young ewes with Mule lambs.

W. and A. Porter, Coniston, averaged £64.24 for a run of draft Herdwick ewes with Texel lambs topping at £68/life.

Native entries strong at Hexham store sale
There was a strong native entry at Hexham's third sale of store cattle and suckled calves this month, with more than 330 head of native bred cattle among a catalogued entry of 661-head.
The sale was led by pen of older Charolais cross bullocks from the Thompsons, Bishop Auckland, which topped at £2,980 to average £2,880/head.
Native cattle topped at £2,880 for a black Aberdeen-Angus heifer from Adrian Hutchinson, Hollin Close, who also sold a bullock by the same sire at £2,780 and averaged £2,746 for three sold.
Leading the show and sale of hoggs and ewes with lambs at foot at £180 per head were the overall championship winners, the first prize pen of 10 Texel cross hoggs with Texel cross lambs at foot from W. and J.A. Longlands, Rusheylaw. The buyer was the judge, Ed Turnbull, Haredene.
Cast ewes and tups topped at £280 for a pair of Texel ewes from R. H. and D. Thirwell, Horneysteads.
Cast tups sold to £215 for six Texel tups from Harehope Farms, East Lilburn. A run of 185 store hoggs sold to a top of £148 for Suffolk cross hoggs from C. A. and J. G. Skidmore, Needless Hall Farm.

Demand strong at Carlisle monthly beef breeding showcase
At Carlisle's beef breeding sale the 285 cows and heifers with calves at foot met with a large ringside of buyers, with 35 lots selling for £5,000 or above.
A run of heifers and calves from Messrs Malone, Pitcairn Farm, Lochgelly, Fife, topped at £6,200 for a Limousin heifer with a Limousin cross steer calf.
Heifers and calves from Messrs McAlister, Wester Tomaston, sold to £6,200 for a Limousin cross heifer with a British Blue cross heifer calf at foot followed by £6,000 for a British Blue cross heifer and Limousin cross heifer calf.
Messrs Livingston, Kirtlevale, saw their run of heifers and calves peak at £6,000 for a Limousin cross heifer and Limousin cross heifer calf. The dispersal for Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray, topped at £5,000 for a Limousin cross cow with a Limousin cross calf.

Store cattle trade holds up at Gisburn
The Farmers Guardian-supported show and sale of store cattle at Gisburn saw bidding peak at £2,800 for a 14-month-old pedigree Beef Shorthorn bull from S.C. Currie, Rathmell, Settle which was bought by R. Haworth, Helmshore.
It was also a young bull from J.T. Crowther, Sowerby Bridge, which judge Richard Booth, Holmfirth, tapped out as overall champion from the 300-plus entry of young bulls, steers and heifers. The British Blue cross sold at £2,400.

Both the steer and heifer classes were won by D. M. and R. E., Capstick, Swinden Moor, Skipton, whose Limousin cross steers sold to £1,780 and British Blue cross heifers to £1,850.
Top price in the clean section was a Limousin cross steer from M. Lee, Sabden, which made £2,700 while the same vendor had Charolais cross steers at £2,680, heifers at £2,500 and Limousin cross heifers at £2,400 taking his average for 10 sold to £2,496.
D.J. Wright, Samlesbury, sold British Blue cross steers to £2,620 and in the native-bred section, an 18-month-old Whitebred Shorthorn steer from Heaps Farm, Bacup, made £2,300.
Parthenaise steers and heifers from M. E. and C. A. Duerden, Dalton-in-Furness, sold to £2,060 and £2,200 respectively, the heifer being June 2024-born.
R.J. and S.J. Clarkson, Blackburn, saw their three British Blue cross heifers sell at £2,350 apiece, while J. and E. Atkinson and Son, Padiham, had British Blue cross heifers at £2,380 twice.
Auctioneer Jack Pickup said despite a general shortage of grass and finished beef prices sliding slightly, the store trade was ‘certainly holding firm'.

Strong store cattle trade at Penrith
The sale of 250 store cattle and feeding bulls at Penrith topped at £2,655/head for two heifers from M.T.P. and S.D. Wills, Dufton. Firstly, for a 22-month-old, Limousin cross, followed by a 25-month-old Charolais, both bought by A. Skelton, Maryport.
Bullocks sold to £2,575 for a 21-month-old Limousin from D. H. and E. R. Strong, Wigton.
There was a strong demand for dairy-bred stock, with British Blue bullocks selling £2,375 for Messrs Bellas, Brampton.
Native-bred cattle also sold well, with Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from G. and E.A. Harrison, Mount Clifton, reaching £2,435.
Messrs Alderson, Step Ends, sold black and white bullocks for £1,955/head.
A yearling Limousin heifer consigned by R. and J. M. Ridley, Ranbeck, made £2,125, with 11-month-old Limousin bulls from the same home selling to £1,975.

Pedigree heifers sell to £3,700 in Gisburn
Gisburn's third dairy sale of the month saw pedigree fresh heifers top at £3,700 while an entry of 35 in-calf heifers from Scotland, sold to £2,220.
Sale leader was a Delta Everton sired, 37kg heifer from Preston breeders R. and M. Cowgill's Mistfy family. Selling at £3,400 was a Stantons Chief daughter from S. J. Sugden, Oakworth.
A £3,250 bid came for Denhamhill Bookmaker Daisy Red 2 from R. B. and R. C. Wester and Sons, Stocksbridge, Sheffield. Jennings Farmers, Ripon, sold Abbeyhouse Alcove Kathy, out of a Sunnybanks dam, at £3,150 while the fifth heifer to top the £3,000 mark was an Osbar entry from N. E. and E. M. Bargh and Son, Blackburn.
A Stantons Chief second calver from Jackbeck herd owners. A. H. Price and Son, Lancaster topped the pedigree cow trade at £2,850.
The in-calf consignment from the Newmeadow herd of Messrs Innes, Nairn, peaked at £2,220 for a Sterndale Grayson sired heifer out of a Deveronside dam and in-calf, as they all were, to Panda Rock N Roll, this one due in June.
Non-pedigree fresh heifers sold to £2,700 from J. A. Lawn, Bradford, with J. H. Whalley and Sons, Darwen, selling at £2,650.

Breeding cattle to £5,600 at Cockermouth
The first part dispersal of cows and heifers and calves from P.E. and M. Capstick, Millom, at Cockermouth peaked at £5,600 for a Limousin heifer with a Limousin cross heifer calf.
The collective sale of cows and calves topped at £5,200 for a British blue heifer with heifer calf from P. and A. Jarman, Workington.
At the sale of ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot the championship went to a pen of five Mule hoggs with single Suffolk cross lambs from Winter Bros, Appleby-in-Westmorland, which later sold for £210/life to Messrs Brough, Clappers.
Reserve champion was awarded to a pen of five continental hoggs with Texel Lambs at foot from J.A. Ritson, Baggra Yeat, which sold for for £180/life.

Breeding cattle in demand at J36
The Farmers Guardian-supported sale of beef breeding cattle at J36 topped at £3,300 twice. Firstly, for the pre-sale show champion, a Limousin cross cow with a Limousin bull calf from B. Holland, Lowgill.
The second outfit to reach £3,300 came from the dispersal of J.M. Livestock, Ayr, whose run of working herd cows also sold to £3,250, £3,100 four times, £2,950 and £2,900. Other cows with calves sold to £3,000 from C.R. Ford, Ulverston whilst the consignment of heifers with calves from C.D. Slinger and L.J. Eaton, Middleton, sold to £2,900, £2,800 and £2,750 twice.
The pedigree section topped at 6,000gns for a Limousin bull from W.A. and G.R. Sedgley, Kirkby Lonsdale.
Charolais bulls sold to 5,000gns twice for J.E. Gaunt, and once for G.J. and G. Billington. British Blue bulls also sold to 5,000gns for Messrs Hewson, Burgh by Sands.
Other Charolais bulls sold to 4,000gns for Messrs Case, Plumpton, with Aberdeen-Angus and Hereford bulls both selling to 800gns for Messrs Rollason, Meathop, and Messrs Hewson respectively.
Pedigree heifers topped at 5,500gns for a British Blue from J.F. and C. Saunders, Ulverston.
Store cattle sold to £2,300 for Limousin bullocks consigned by J.A. Airey, New Hutton, with others to £2,200.
B.J. Bowness, Kendal, and G. Cuthbertson, Capplerigg, both sold 20-month-old Aberdeen-Angus steers to £2,200.
British Blues sold to £2,160 from J.E. Wightman, Lupton. A pair of Herefords from T.D., M.E. and G.E. Todd, Sedburgh, made £2,100/head.
A quartet of Aberdeen-Angus heifers from Messrs Wightman made £2,000 /head and Charolais heifers sold to £1,940 for W.A. Hodgson, Kendal.
Bull calves sold to £940 twice. Firstly, for a British Blue from C.M. and C.S. Chapplehow, Penrith, and a Charolais from J.H. Towers and Son, Tunstall.
Aberdeen- Angus bulls topped at £910 for Messrs Threlkeld, Burton in Kendal, with others at £880 from C.R. Dickson, Thurnham.
Limousins sold to £850 from Messrs Chapplehow. Month-old calves sold to £710 for British Blue bulls from A. Pickthall, New Hutton.
In the heifer section, Aberdeen-Angus claimed the three top prices, reaching £820 for W. and S. Airey, Whittington, £810 for Messrs Dickson and £790 for Messrs Threlkeld. INRA95 heifers sold to £770 for A.K. and B.M. Robinson, Arkholme, with Limousins to £750 and £710 from Messrs Chapplehow.
