British Farming Awards: Soil-first approach helps Cheshire dairy farm build sustainable future

Andy Goodwin has transformed Dayhouse Green farm in Cheshire, through his efficient grass-based system. Covering 155 hectares (383 acres), including rented land, the farm operates with 300 autumn-calving cows, supplying high-fat, high-protein milk to Joseph Heler.

Andy and his wife Katy have modernised operations, introduced a new herd and invested in essential infrastructure since taking over the farm in 2020 after Katy's father suffered an accident. A key to the farm's success is its meticulous grazing management, with cows grazing from March to mid-October on a 95% grass diet.

Using Agrinet, Andy closely measures and records grazing data to optimise efficiency. In winter, the cows receive a balanced diet of grass silage, maize and corn, fed using a pivot steer loader in troughs. The farm's strategic breeding programme, featuring in-house artificial insemination, has led to an impressive 9% empty rate in the latest breeding season.

Soil health

Beyond animal management, Andy places a strong emphasis on soil health. The farm has significantly reduced ploughing, implemented cover cropping and focused on soil compaction management. Regular soil testing allows for targeted nutrient applications, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilisers. These efforts have successfully cut nitrogen usage by a third while maintaining strong grass growth.

Investments in infrastructure, such as tracks and water troughs, further extend the grazing season and reduce machinery reliance. Andy and Katy manage the farm alongside two full-time staff and an apprentice, fostering a positive working environment by prioritising training and well-being.

The farm is also deeply engaged with the local community, hosting school visits to educate the public about sustainable farming and grassland management.

Sustainability

The British Farming Awards judges were particularly impressed with Andy's commitment to sustainability, praising his transition from a traditional system to a specialised grass-based operation. They highlighted his dedication to reducing the farm's carbon footprint, improving soil health and fostering efficiency while engaging with the wider community.

Upon winning the award, Andy expressed his gratitude.

He said, "We enjoy what we do, or we wouldn't be doing it. It's an honour and a privilege, especially after a difficult 12 months. We're really pleased to be nominated and win. It's great to have so many farmers and like-minded people in the room. I'm really passionate about what we do, and we're doing a good job."

Andy's achievements at Dayhouse Green Farm exemplify the future of sustainable dairy farming through impressive grassland management, proving that profitability and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
