Stirling Bull Sales: Beef Shorthorns top at 20,000gns

The Beef Shorthorn bidding topped at 20,000gns for 55 bulls, averaging £6,476, down £1,015 on the year, with a clearance rate of 71%

Clinching the top price was Lucinda Townsend and Derek Steen, Moffat, with the April 2023-born bull, Coxhill Taskforce. By the record price Meonside Nidavellier, which the couple bought from Stirling for 27,000gns, and out of Coxhill Blythsome Lia L1783, a foundation cow family, it sold to A. and C. Farms, Rutland.

Next at 18,000gns was Meonside Thor from Tom Bradley Farmer, Dumfries. A son of Podehole Piper and full brother to the 8,500gns champion heifer at Stirling last October, Meonside Serenity, it went home with W.J. and J. Green, Corskie, Fochabers.

Stuart Mair and Sons, Turriff, were next at 16,000gns with the reserve junior champion, Muiresk Turra. Reserve male champion and best 2023-born bull at last year's Royal Highland Show, it was also knocked down to A. and C. Farms.

Making 12,000gns was Redstones Thunder, a June 2023-born bull from Charlie Fletcher and Jack Kay, Lockerbie.

By Vale Meadows Flossy's Cavalier which was male champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2022 and out of Redstones Crocus, was champion heifer in the 2022 Scottish Herd Competition, it sold to Thistledown Cowford, Perthshire. 

Meonside Thor, from Tom Bradley Farmer, Dumfries, which sold for 18,000gns to W.J. and J. Green, Corskie, Fochabers.

Four bulls sold for 10,000gns. The first was Templer of Upsall from the Upsall Castle Farms consignment, brought forward by the McCulloch family.

By Nelson of Upsall, whose first three sons averaged 9,000gns at Stirling last February, it went home with D. and E. Clark, Carluke.

Templer of Upsall, from the Upsall Castle Consignment, Thirsk, which sold for 10,000gns.

Another from Upsall Castle Farms and second at this money was the reserve senior champion Tarquin of Upsall. Out of Augusta X1158 of Upsall, it was knocked down to N. J. and A. Barrett, South Wooton.

Michelle and Richard Pettit, Fochabers, had the third bull to sell for 10,000gns, Knightland Toronto.

By the AI bull Chapelton Typhoon and the first bull calf out of Ballyvaddy Heathermaid L864, it sold to J. Stewart and Partners, Peebles.

The final at this money was Tribune of Upsall from the Upsall Castle Farms consignment. Another son of Nelson of Upsall, it sold to Lour Farms, Forfar.

It was Coxhill Thunder, another from Lucinda Townsend and Derek Steen, which was next at 9,500gns. Also by Meonside Nidavellir, it was knocked down to A. Paton, Maybole.  

Two bulls sold for 9,000gns. Fiona Davidson, Peterhead, was the first at this money with Fordie Taskmaster.

By Coxhill Prince which was bought from Carlisle in 2012, the March 2023-born bull was junior male champion at Stars of the Future in 2023. It went home with D.G. Munro, Sutherland.  

Chapelton Thames, a March 2023-born bull from Jamie Biggar, Castle Douglas, was next at this money. By the 13,000gns Chapelton Petrus it was knocked down to G.L. Riby, Fraisthorpe.  

Beef Shorthorn females sold to 6,500gns, for Meonside Broadhooks True, a Coxhill Rocko daughter from Tom Bradley Farmer. The heifer sold to Bowen Farms, Nelson.  

Next at 5,200gns was another from the same home, Meonside Millicent Topaz. Half-sister to the overall champion at Stirling in October 2024, it sold to Laga Farms, Orkney.  

Averages: 55 bulls, £6,476 (-£1,015 on 2024); 9 females, £3,990.
