Auction mart sales round up: Skipton dogs to £13,700; Willsbro sale tops at 8,800gns and Limousin bulls sell to 11,000gns;

Skipton dogs to £13,700

A bid of £13,700 led Skipton's timed online summer sheepdog for Swffryd Emi, a fully trained black and white bitch from Kevin Evans, Brecon. Rising 16 months, Emi is by Mr Evans' own Hendre Sam, out of Rhys Groucott's Bell, and sold to an Italian buyer.

Zac, a March 2023-born fully trained black and white dog from John MacDonald, Isle of Skye, secured a £4,500 bid. This one by Dewi Jenkins' Jock, out of A.L. Thomas' Nantcydros Lottie, heads to Lanarkshire Alastair Walker.

Another from Mr Evans sold for the part-broken top price of £3,700. This was for Gwen, a red and white 15-month-old bitch by his own Thornbury Max out of his father, David's, Dunelle Gwen. It sold William Colton, Yelverton, Devon.

At £2,900 was fully trained Spen Head Bob, a May 2023-born black and white dog from Philip Mellin, Oakworth. By L. Bancroft's Fly and out of the same breeder's Fly, it sold to Graham Oliver, Wooler.

Dan Moore, Isle of Man, sold white and tan dog Rip for £2,700 to Ross Games, Powys, while a £2,300 bid topped the unbroken pup section for Mr Evans' 11-week-old red and white bitch Abi.

By his own Middery Frank, out of Claire Slater's Whiteley Fleck, it sold to Dan Davis, Cheltenham.

Shropshire's Neville Bird, Ludlow, sold black and white bitch, Bryn-yr-Orsedd Meg for £2,000 to John Moriarty, Co. Kerry, while Logan Williams, Llandeilo, sold fully trained litter brother and sister, Nedwin Zac and Nedwin Tara, two black and white entries for £1,400 each. Tara remains in Carmarthenshire with Arwel Morgan, Lllandovery, while Zac goes to Newry, Northern Ireland, with Sam McConnell.

Strong trade at Willsbro sale

Wills Brothers, Wadebridge, are restructuring their business selling a substantial proportion of their Willsbro herd of Holsteins including the majority of the milking animals, together with their recently born calves at a series of sales.
At the first sale this week 393 went through the ring, more than half of which were calves under 10 months old, to average £2,514.38.

Redhead Lambda Mudonna, an 88 point two-year-old bred by Tom Hull, Lancashire, and bred from Knonaudale Mud family, Canada made 8,500gns to W.Jones.
But its eight-month-old daughter by Seimers Cway Pace made top price of 8,800gns to the Yates family's Logan herd, Castle Douglas. Three more of its calves by Pace, Hulu and Comrie all made more than 3,000gns.

Top price for the 2025-born calves was 6,500gns for an Eye Candy calf from the Bitcoin family, which sold to David, Claire and Matt Jones, Wiltor herd, Monmouthshire, who also paid 6,800gns for its dam.

Willsbro Hotjob Raven 156 EX91 currently yielding more than 70kg daily was bought by James McNeil, Cairnpat Holsteins, Stranraer,  

The biggest volume buyers were Worden Farm, Holsworthy, who are establishing a new herd, and bought 59 of the 2024-born calves, while in the milking section John Colgrove, Mevagissey, bought 19 and Woodhey Dairy, Nantwich, took 18 at prices up to 4,100gns.

 Averages - 143 cows and calved heifers, £3,954.02; 132 September to December 2024-born calves, £ 1,950.06; 118 February to May 2025-born calves, £1,394.81;

393 head, £2,514.38.

                     Limousin bulls to 11,000gns

A top call of 11,000gns led Carlisle's summer sale of Limousin bulls for September 2023-born Wanthwaite Unbreakable, a Cloughhead Lord son from T. W. Bell and Son, Keswick, which was bought by Messrs Sisson and Sons, Catterlen, Penrith.

Strawfrank Underwood, a December 2023-born bull from Allan Campbell, Lanark, made 10,000gns. This one by Westpit Oklahoma sold to Messrs Mactier and Son, Mochrum, Newton Stewart.

Another 10,000gns bid secured RINGWAY UMBRO, the first lot into the ring from P. J. Henshall, Lockerbie. This Millington Langton son was bought by Messrs Mcgill and Co., Whauphill, Newton Stewart.

Making 8,000gns for S and T. Illingworth, Lockerbie, was January 2023-born Woodmarsh Royalmint son Glenrock Vegas, which was bought by Messrs Youngson, Stewartfield, Aberdeenshire.

Prime lambs in demand at Kirkby Stephen

Topping the High Fives show and sale of spring lambs at Kirkby Stephen at £234 and 585p/kg were the first placed pen of five 40kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Ormside, who also sold 48kg lambs to £230 (479.2p/kg) and 43kg lambs to £202/head (469.8p/kg).

The judge, Ben Cowton, Tow Law, awarded the overall championship to the first prize pen of five Beltex cross lambs from JoJo Andrews, York, Weighing 44kg/head they went on to sell for £220/head (500p/kg).

The third prize pen of five 45kg Texel cross lambs from the same home sold for £209/head (464.4p/kg), a pen of five 43kg at £192.50, 51kg to £196, and 45kg at £191 with the consignment of 27 lambs averaging 45.8kg and £200.61 (437.9p/kg).
Messrs Sowerby also sold the first prize pen of five 52kg Suffolk cross lambs at £200/head and 52kg Texel cross lambs at £200/head.

Charlotte and Georgia Davies, Leicestershire, sold a pen of 12 42kg Beltex cross lambs at £199 (473.8p/kg) with another pen of 13 40kg lambs making £189 (472.5p/kg).

Mule lambs sold to £140/head for a pen of 43kg entries from Messrs Slack, Hilton.
The SQQ was 368.1p/kg with an overall average of 367.72p/kg (£155.50/head) for 1,558 lambs sold.

Cast sheep sold to top at £240 for a Texel cross ewe from Sam Senior, Tadcaster.

Suffolk gimmers realise 4,900gns

The online timed Mullinvale Majestics sale, held on behalf of Mark and Darragh McMenamin, Donegal, saw 21 Suffolk gimmers and 92 straws of Suffolk semen offered for sale.

Leading the trade at 4,900gns was a gimmer by the 30,000gns Cairnton Stirk. Out of a homebred dam, its granddam also bred the 50,000gns Mullinvale Munro.

Top price gimmer at 4,900gns

Selling for 2,900gns was another Cairnton Stirk daughter, a gimmer out of a Finn Vale ewe which was purchased for 3,000gns. It sold to Cathal Tuohy, Coose.

Another gimmer by Mullinvale Ace made 2,800gns. Out of a Rhaeadar ewe purchased at the Dark Diamonds sale in 2020 for 5,500gns, it sold to Jonathon Dufrane, Belgium.

Averages: 22 gimmers, £1,236.14; 50 straws, £111.30.

Gleave dispersal to £3,080

A top price of £3,080 was realised at the dispersal of the year-round calving Holstein Friesian herd, held on behalf of the Gleave family, Crewe, at Market Drayton Market.

Sale leader at 3,080 was a fresh calved commercial heifer off a 8,369kgs 4.67% butterfat 3.42% protein dam.

The same buyer also gave £3,000 for a fresh calved third calver by Relough Razzy.

An October-calved red and white heifer, due again in early November, also sold for £3,000, with 11 cattle in total making more than £2,800.

Averages: 111 milking cows and heifers including faults, £2,187; 2 in-calf heifers, £1,875.

 McDermotts to £1,000 twice

Two £1,000 bids led the McDermotts flock's third annual Designer Gene's online sale of pedigree sheep, firstly for February 2025-born Dassekop cross Badger Face Texel ram lamb McDermotts Just The Job, a Diamond Imtheone son which was bought by Messrs Burgess, New Abbey, Dumfriesshire.

Another £1,000 bid secured March 2025-born Dutch Spotted ewe lamb McDermotts Irish Girl. This one by Ellimee Hercules sold to Messrs Henderson, Co. Fermanagh.

Making £800 was another Dutch Spotted ewe lamb, McDermotts Isabel, by Diamond Electro which sold to Messrs Gilmour, Co. Monaghan.

Messrs Forbes, Co. Down, bought a March 2025-born Cheviot ewe lamb by Caradoo Glebe for £700.

Market Drayton Dairy to £3,500

Dairy entries at Market Drayton's June show and sale topped at £3,500 for the second prize pedigree heifer, Whitgreave Applaud Fern, from Stubbs Partners, Whitgreave.

At £3,300 to top the cow trade was a second calver from Messrs Shutt and Mansell, Flashbrook, while a £3,150 bid came for second calver, Knaptoft Dalliance Ruth, from J.M. Griffin, Sutton Coldfield.

A third calver from Clayden Farm Partnership, Crewe, sold for £3,000, with stock bulls also topping at £3,000 for a 16-month-old Simmental.

The day's champion, Chorlton Shield Redrose Red, a second calver from J. Lomax, Baldwins Gate, sold for £2,900, while first prize commercial heifer from N. Stubbs, Hiderstone, made £2,800.

Averages: 17 fresh cows, £2,544; 55 fresh heifers, £2,318.

British Blues top Gisburn trade

Gisburn's calf sale saw a top price of £1,000 for the third time in recent weeks, while in the prime cattle ring, a British Blue-sired heifer realised 504p/kg and a British Blue bull grossed £3,336.

Heading the entry of 179 calves was a two-month-old bull calf from W. H. and J. W. Hartley, Barnoldswick, by the Genus bull Oracle. It was one of 46 British Blue bulls on offer, which levelled at £644 for all ages. Three Charolais bulls from H. H. and M. G. Robinson and Son, Slaidburn, sold at £960, £920 and £900.
Demand remained strong for the 40 Aberdeen- Angus bull calves, with those on named-sire passports reaching £800 for a Rawburn Blackbush sired four-month-old entry from H. and M. Dugdale and Son, Settle. Dairy bulls from the same home sold to £490.

Heifer calf trade peaked at £850 for a four-month-old Charolais from Messrs Robinson, while the 32 British Blue heifers sold to £750 for a one-month-old entry from J. and S. A. Lancaster, Skipton.

In the monthly prime beef show, the champion was a black, British Blue-sired heifer from M. and C. Wilcock, Ashton, Makerfield, which went on to sell at 504p/kg, grossing £2,963 to retail butchers J. B. Wilkinson and Son,Yorkshire.

The same buyers also paid the top price of 430p/kg for steers which was a 550kg Limousin cross from J. H. Stevenson and Son, Farnley. Overall top price of £3,334 in the beef ring came for an 834kg British Blue from Messrs Coates, Settle.
