Limousin heifer claims beef supreme at Suffolk Show

The Limousin heifer, Brockhurst Tranquility, was the choice of judge, Keith Jempson, Banbury, in the beef inter-breed championship at Suffolk Show.

Sheep

The sheep inter-breed title went to Harry Elsden, Hertford, with a ewe lamb from his Hertford flock. By stock ram Simples Dark Fruits and out of a home-bred ewe, it was being shown for the first time.

Mr Elsden runs 15 Hampshire Down ewes alongside a 300-head commercial flock, with all finished lambs going into his butchery, Mimram Valley Butchers.

Standing reserve was the Charollais champion, a shearling ewe by Bincombe Warrior, from Carol and Geoff Watson's Sulwood flock, Kettering, shown by Will Abram.

The judge, Tim Ward, Shropshire, said his champion was ‘a cracking ewe lamb with great presence and meat in all the right places, which moved exceptionally well.'

Dairy

In the dairy rings, the supreme inter-breed championship went to the Holstein champion, Wigboro Outlay Beechnut, an August 2020-born heifer from Smith Farm Clacton, St Osyth. The Outlay daughter, which was on its first outing, calved last December and is currently giving 40kg daily.

In reserve was the any other breed champion, Bluegrass Chieftains Blackberry, a Jersey fourth calver from C.R. Cawston, who milk 110 cows, including 15 Jerseys, near Bungay.

Bought in February this year, the daughter of Bluegrasss Chrysanthemums Chieftain calved in March and is giving 30kg daily.

Pigs

For the second year running, the pig inter-breed title went to Paul Churchyard, Breckles. This time it was with his Large Black July 2022-born home-bred gilt, Breckles Grandeur 25 by Addison Attempt 2, which was reserve inter-breed champion at South Suffolk Show earlier in the year.

The judge, Andrew Warriner, Crayke, said his champion was an outstanding pig with all the right breed characteristics and had been a clear winner.

In reserve was Sutherland Maple Leaf 4, a September 2022-born Large White gilt by Tates Gul 33, from Amy Readhead-Higgins, Leiston, which was shown by Josh Bell-Tye.
