British Blue leads Melton multi-breed
CATTLE met a 96% clearance rate at the spring multi-breed pedigree show and sale at Melton Mowbray where a top price of 9,000gns was paid for a British Blue bull.
This was Lawford Lodge Uptown Funk, a 26-month-old Almeley Pogba son from Sean Daly, Rugby. It is bred from Trencorm Nusto, a Littlebank Gigolo daughter.
Blue bulls also reached 8,000gns for Drift Under and Over by Topgun Splash and out of Trent Valley Spicegirl, from A. and P. Phillips, Reading.
Messrs Phillips also received 6,000gns for Drift Vicky, a two-year-old heifer also by Topgun Splash.
A large offering of Limousins peaked at 8,000gns for Calverton Vanpercy, a Gascoines Ozzyosbourne son from Judith Fountaine, Beechampton. Its dam is the Dinmore Lexicon-sired Calverton Orla.
Next best at £6,500 was a Limousin bull from H.G. Sharman and Son, Colmworth, which sold through the commercial section.
Two Limousin bulls hit 5,500gns – the champion, the Ashledge Ontatio-sired Ashledge Vanguard from A.G. Kirton and Sons, Kinlet, and the Homebyres Macadoo-sired Meadowrig Pedro from Longwood Farm, Saunderton Lee.
On to the Limousin females and Ladybowers Raquela, a Powerful Irish daughter from Stephen and Ashley Mills, Redmires, sold for 6,400gns along with its November-born bull calf by Glenrock Redemption.
Two Limousin outfits made 6,200gns for Messrs Fieldson, Gainsborough. The two Anside Optimusprime daughters, Fieldson Treacle and Fieldson Toshiba, sold with their Fieldson Universe-sired bull calves.
Making 5,600gns was the female champion, Brockhurst Allure, a Goldies Relish-sired yearling from Messrs Mash, Chesham.
Charolais bulls reached 5,000gns for Whitetower Volcanic from A. Howell, East Dereham, with Beef Shorthorns to 4,000gns for Hannington Viktor from Messrs Hornton, Cirencester, and Shorthorn heifers to 2,550gns for the in-calf Langhams Rothes Venus from A. and C. Farms, Rutland.
Lincoln Reds hit 1,650gns twice for heifers from T. Green's Chestnut herd, Irnham.

Dispersal leads dairy offering at Skipton
A CALVED heifer from the part-dispersal of Rylstone-based Jonathan Caygill's dairy herd secured the championship and top price at the April show and sale at Skipton.
The leading heifer went on to sell to Danny and Caroline Yarrow, Cononley, for £2,750.
A trio of fresh heifers from Pete Baul, Bishop Thornton, saw two from the Sparkle family sell for £2,840 and £2,440.
Cows sold to £2,350 for the first prize winner, a third-calver giving 35kg from Messrs Caygill.
Making £2,150 was the second prize cow, a second-calver yielding 41kg from Margaret Goldie, Danby Wiske.
Reserve champion was a Denovo Raffa daughter from Mark Smith, Winterburn, which sold for £2,100.
The sale concluded with a dozen maiden heifers from Allan, Susan and Richard Throup, Silsden Moor, which averaged £1,311 and peaked at £1,600.

Rainbow is Victorious at Exeter
JERSEY females hit 3,100gns at the Gold Top sale of pedigrees at Exeter, where buyers were present from Pembrokeshire, Cheshire and across the West Country.
Leading the trade was Cardinney Victorious Rainbow GP84, a second-calver by River Valley Victorious from James Warren and family, Penzance.
A run from Messrs Warren saw the heifers, Cardinney Addiction Deborah and Cardinney Masterclass Honeysuckle, sell for 2,550gns and 2,500gns, respectively, while another second calver made 2,300gns.
Second best price of 2,800gns was the dearest of 18 freshly calved heifers, Quintrelly Bowlers Delve, from Mike and Claire Colwell, Looe.
Messrs Colwell also sold Quintrell Addiction Marvel for 2,400gns and another heifer for 2,350gns.

Hiltonbury Roulette Carnation from Oliver Neagle, Winchester, sold for 2,000gns, with Mr Neagles.
Newcastle-based Jeff and Anthea Daw sold Jubilee Engineer Ceres 2 for 1,950gns while Ashley Johns, Camborne, saw his Trenoweth Addiction Bopplenut make 1,700gns.
In-calf heifers sold to 1,850gns for Quintrell Laspada Nicole from Messrs Colwell who sold another for 1,750gns.
Autumn-calving heifers reached 1,600gns from Messrs Neagle.
Averages – Cows and heifers – Cardinney, £2,467; Trenoweth, £1,627; Quintrell, £2,038; Hiltonbury, £1,831; Jubilee, £2,047. In-calf heifers – Quintrell, £1,742; Hiltonbury, £1,606.
Stores top at 566p/kg at Lockerbie
AN entry of 625 store cattle were sold through Lockerbie, a number the market has not seen for more than a decade with trade reaching 566p/kg.
This was for Simmental bullocks from Messrs Scott, Dinley, with bullocks also reaching £2,440 for Limousins from Messrs Wilson, Lochmaben.
Messrs Wilson topped the gross trade at £2,460 for a Limousin heifer with another at £2,450.
The champion from the pre-sale show, a British Blue heifer from Messrs Robson, Lochmaben, sold for 531p/kg.

Jewel shines at Borderway
DAIRY bulls sold at the Border and Lakeland offering at Carlisle averaged £4,486 with buyers recorded from Aberdeenshire down to Kent.
A top price of 11,00gns was paid for the British Friesian, Whinnow Jewel, a September 2024-born son of Inch Jake from I. and G.M. Blamire, Carlisle. Bred from the EC91-2E Whinnow Orchid 9, Jewel goes back to an EX94-rated cow that was twice a winner of the UK's Production Awards. It sold to Messrs Howat, Cumnock.
Whinnow Maxim, from the same home, sold to Messrs Welsh, Kilmarnock, for 10,000gns. Again by Inch Jake, Maxim is from a different maternal line being out of the 14,232kg Redbrook Milkmaid 8 which also produced the 10,000gns Winnow Gateway sold in 2024.
Messrs Howard, Blackburn, paid 5,500gns for the British Friesian, Nerewater Regard by Nerewater Carton, from Nerewater Farm, Wigton.

Holstein Friesians reached 7,000gns twice when the champion and reserve both went under the hammer at that price. The champion, Gerrard Perfection from Andrew Carter, Wigton, is a 14-month-old Siemers Rengd Parfect son bred from a high production dam by Doc that boasts a further six EX-rated dams in its pedigree. Perfection sold to Messrs Howat.
The reserve, Annandale Kinghorn from W. and J. Armour, Moffat, sold to Messrs Mercer, Bolton, also for 7,000gns. Bred from the Kimberley family, Kinghorn's first six dams all classified Excellent with several producing more than 100-tonnes in their lifetime.
Selling to Messrs Meredith, Strichen, for 6,200gns was Warnelview Boden from Kevin and Christine Wilson, Carlisle. This S-S-1 PR Renegade son's dam and grand-dam peaked at more than 15,000kg in their fourth lactation.
Averages – 21 Holsteins bulls, £4,215.75; 9 British Friesian bulls, £5,086.66.

Charolais cattle lead at Penrith
STORE cattle passed the £2,500 barrier twice at Penrith.
Dearest at £2,615 was a 22-month-old Charollais bullock from W. Routledge, Bewcastle, whose consignment of out-wintered stores also jointly topped the heifer section at £2,485/head for a pen of five.
Also surpassing the £2,500 mark was a Limousin bullock from Claremont Properties. The top heifer price of £2,485 was matched by a 26-month-old Beef Shorthorn from Messrs Wiseman and Son, Pooley Bridge.
Dairy-bred sorts reached £2,275 and £2,265 for 24-month-old Ayrshire bullocks from G. and E.A. Harrison, Penrith.
