The supreme champion award made its debut this year, with the winner receiving a shield donated in memory of the late Maimie Paterson, Dunblane, a long-time supporter of the event.

Presented by the Paterson family, the accolade went to Bruce and Linda Goldie, son Thomas and daughter Isla who were exhibiting cattle from their Dumfries-shire based herd for the first time at this event. Sired by the 12,000gns Burnbank Sergeant, their 16-month-old Limousin bull, Goldies Vista, is out of Goldies Raquel, a paternal sister of the three Goldies bulls that sold at last month's sales for 70,000gns, 36,000gns and 32,0000gns. Earlier securing the prize for best senior animal, Vista is now destined for sale at either Stirling or Carlisle in February.

It caught the eye of the inter-breed judge, Philip Halhead, Lancaster, who said: "He had great style and glided around the ring, with that extra bit of length and power."

Praising the overall high standard of champions across the commercial, continental and native sections, Mr Halhead selected the junior champion as reserve overall. This was an 11-month-old Charolais heifer, Arradfoot Agnes, from Thor Atkinson, Ulverston. By the privately bought Tophill Oscar, it was brought out by stockman Steven O'Kane.

Reserve in the junior inter-breed contest was the April-born Aberdeen-Angus heifer, Ladyluck Karisma B264 by Rulesmain Philip X557 out of a Blelack bred dam, from Nicola Howie, Parkgate, Dumfries. A first prize winner at Agri-Expo, this heifer's full brother sold for 12,000gns at Carlisle in May.

Second best in the senior section from Kevin Watret, Annan, was the 13-month-old British Blue heifer, Solway View Ultraviolet, which stood inter-breed pedigree champion at Agri-Expo. It is by Topgun Splash, a bull bred by Solway View's stockman, Ali Jackson, out of Solway View Pearl.

The Joe Watson Memorial pairs competition was won by the top continental pair, a Limousin duo from Robert and Jean Graham, Stirling. They were embryo brothers, Grahams Vito and Grahams Virgil, both Ampertaine Elgin sons set for sale at Carlisle in February.

In the continental pairs contest, it was another pair of Limousin bulls, Springsett Victory and Springsett Valentina, that took reserve for Dougie McBeath and Sarah Jane Jessop, Bannockburn.

Top native pair were the Highlanders, Bonnie Matilda of Moorside and Faith of Moorside, both from Robert and Dianne Bradley, Bradford. Reserve native pair were the Aberdeen-Angus duo, Keirsbeath Prescot B613 and Keirsbeath Prince B615, from Caroline Morton, Larkhall.

Best group of three was a trio of black commercial heifers including a Limousin cross from the Robertson family, Tomintoul, which was shown alongside Starburst, a Limousin cross from Allan and Susan Campbell, Hurlford, and Bonnie Blue, a British Blue cross from the Hamiltons, Chapelton. The Limousin trio of Goldies Vista, Glenrock Versace and Grahams Vavavoom, finished in reserve.

Young handlers

The evening prior to the calf show, there was a huge entry for the young handler's competition, with the overall award going to the winner of the senior section, 19-year-old Katie Aitken, Carlisle, while the best of the juniors, 11-year-old Elliw Grug Davies, took reserve.
