Talybont tups top at 16,000gns

The Farmers Guardian supported society sale of Talybont Welsh rams at Talybont-On-Usk saw highs of 16,000gns with the 370 rams sold averaging £961.46 for yearlings with a 92% clearance.

Talybont tups top at 16,000gns

A bid of 16,000gns saw established breeders, J. J. Greenow, Llanthony, top the trade with a yearling ram. After keen bidding, it sold to R. J. Davies, Crickhowell.

The sale draw sees breeders sell their rams in draws of five spread throughout the day with this pen averaging £6,647.06.

R. W. and L. A. Jones, Builth Wells sold a yearling for 11,000gns to J.J. Greenow, Llanthony

The first of two rams to be knocked down at 11,000gns was from R. W. and L. A. Jones, Builth Wells. Earlier in the day, the yearling was awarded third in the pre-sale show before selling to J.J. Greenow.

The next at 11,000gns joined R. J. Davies, Crickhowell. Bred by J.J. Greenow, the yearling was a twin to the top price. 

At 9,000gns was a yearling ram bred by the pre-sale show judge, Alan Tay, Ystradfellte, which sold to C. Jones, Llandrindod Wells. 

Another yearling from R. W. and L. A. Jones, Builth Wells, was knocked down for 6,500gns to I. Greenow, Crickhowell.

The first of two which reached the 5,000gns mark was another from J.J. Greenow, which found a new home with R. W. and L. A. Jones, Builth Wells. 

Also making 5,000gns from Mr Tay was a ram which sold to C. Jones, Llandrindod Wells. Another from the Tay pen sold for 4,000gns to D. R. Williams, Penderyn.

The champion from Lewis Pritchard, Crickhowell, it sold for 4,000gns to A. Tay, Ystradfellte.

After setting a breed record at last year's sale for 26,000gns, young breeder, Lewis Pritchard, Crickhowell, was awarded first prize yearling ram and overall champion for the second year in a row. Backing his judgement, the champion went on to sell for 4,000gns to Mr Tay.

Coming from the same pen, was another yearling which headed to North Wales with P. Smith, Denbeigh, at 3,500gns with the pen of five averaging £2,304.76.  

Topping the pen for C. Jones, Llandrindod Wells, at 3,200gns was a yearling that caught the eye of the Chamberlain family, Crickhowell.

At the same money was the pen topper for R. J. Davies, Crickhowell. It sold to J. J. Greenow, Llanthony.  

Making 3,000gns was a yearling ram from J. R. Joseph, Brecon, which was knocked down to A. J. and E. A. Price, Llandovery.

Aged rams saw a high of 800gns from C. M. Davies, Penderyn, selling locally to D. R. Williams, Penderyn.   

Averages – 362 yearling rams, £961.46; 8 aged rams, £518.44.
