Charolais, Simmental and Blonde bulls set new records at Carlisle

Goldies Unbeatable sells for record 55,000gns

Topping the British Charolais Cattle Society sale at Carlisle and setting a new breed centre record of 55,000gns was Goldies Unbeatable. Consigned by Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, the November 2023-born son of Gretnahouse Heman out of Goldies Icequeen, was reserve male and reserve overall champion before selling to Neil and Stuart Barclay, Insch.

Two bulls sold for 18,000gns. The first was Thrunton Uplander, a June 2023-born bull by Baillieston Orcadian out of Thrunton Lilac from J.H.C. Campbell and Sons, Alnwick, which was knocked down to Q. Limond, Maybole.

The other bull to sell for 18,000gns was January 2024-born Caylers Vinny by Goldstar Simon out of Caylers Polly from David and Louise Barker, Nuthampstead, which sold to Ian and Dot Goldie, Solwayfirth, Allen Drysdale, Glenericht, and Alison Gray, Firhills.

The male and overall champion, Newhouse Unionjack, a December 2023-born son of Ballinlare Phanton from R.M. Adam and Son, Forfar, made 15,000gns to W.N. Lindsay, Kirriemuir.

G. and G. Law, Galston, then paid 14,000gns for Goldies Unsunghero, a December 2023-born bull by Harestone Sandiego from Hamish Goldie.

Females topped at 14,000gns for Grinshill Valentina, a July 2024-born heifer by Lochend Nighthawk out of Gretnahouse Paradise consigned by the Coppinger Wyllie Partnership, Buxton, which went home with R.M. Dunlop, Dalry.

Averages: 30 bulls, £11,581.50; 12 females, £6,483.75.

Simmental set new records

The Simmental trade at Carlisle was led at 20,000gns by first prize winner, Grangewood Platinum from Andrew, Yvonne, and Callum Leedham, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, equalling the Simmental bull record in England and setting a new centre record.

The September 2023-born sale leader was a son of Ranfurly Impeccable out of Grangewood Tollie's Iris. The buyers were Jim and Patricia Goldie, Annan.

Grangewood Phoenix 23 another Ranfurly Impeccable son from the same home made 8,500gns to Messrs Adkin and Sons, Thornhill.

Delfur Farms, Rothes, sold two bulls, for 12,000gns, and 10,000gns respectively, with both by Islavale Magnum.  Selling at 12,000gns was the October 2023-born Delfur Peaky Blinder 23 out of Delfur Weigela E12, which was bought by Messrs Hogg and Partners, Earlston.

The overall male champion, Delfur Pocket Rocket 23 sold for 10,000gns to Messrs Swerling, Giles, Buckinghamshire.

Also at 12,000gns was the heterozygous polled bull Hepplewhite Premium 23 (P) from John and Olive June Trafford, Cockermouth. This July 2023-born bull by Highcross Matador 21 (PP), sold to Messrs Johnston, By Falkirk.  Hepplewhite Prancer 23 (P) by Castor Herminius (PP) from the same home, made 10,000gns to Messrs Ord, Morpeth.   

Jimmy and Vikki Wood, Preston, sold the two youngest bulls for 10,500gns, and 10,000gns respectively.  At 10,500gns was the reserve male champion, March 2024-born Popes Ragnar 24 by Clonagh Lucky Explorer out of Penton Kristina 19 which sold to Messrs Holliday, Seascale.

At 10,000gns, by the same sire was February 2024-born Popes Radius 24 which sold to Cowx and Son, Wigton.

The Wood family also secured overall supreme championship with their 14-month-old heifer, Popes Radiant Eyes, also by Lucky Explorer, which sold for 5,000gns to James Iliff, Stafford.  

Averages: 14 bulls, £9,787.50; (+£5,185); 5 heifers, £3,654; 14 high health heifers, £2,871.42.

Champion tops British Blonde sale

The British Blonde breed record price of 12,000gns was matched at Carlisle for the pre-sale show champion, Hallfield Umpire 23 from P. Weightman and Sons, Co Durham. The son of Jiggywiggs Oscar out of Hallfield Lauren, sold to C. Gammage for the Stonebyres herd, Lanark.

The reserve champion, April 2023-born Hallfield Untouchable by Aaron Jaigo out of Hallfield Nefertiti from the same home sold for 11,000gns to W.J. Scott for the Shotley herd, Hexham.

D. C. and C. M. Newhouse,  Skipton, paid 8,500gns for June-2023 born Silverwood Uriah by Stonelea Orion from N. McKnight, Co. Down for 8,500gns. The first prize junior bull, Silverwood Udel, another Stonelea Orion from the same home, made 7,000gns to T Ireland, Cleator, Cumbria.

At the same money Messrs Walker, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham snapped up Hallfield Usian,  Jiggywigs Oscar son from Messrs Weightman.

Average: 6 bulls, £9,100.

Aberdeen-Angus peak at 12,500gns

Tonley Vettel A130 from Neil Wattie, Alford, Aberdeenshire, topped the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society sale at Carlisle at 12,500gns. The January 2024-born son of Kilmaluag Eriskay T203 out of Tonley Vine V626 sold to Messrs Thomas, Montgomery.

Making 12,000gns was Ladyluck Karate Kid, a January 2024-born bull by Rulesmains Phillip X557 consigned by Nicola Howie, Parkgate, Dumfries. The buyer was Messrs Wilson, Moffatt.

Also selling for 12,000gns was the first prize winner, March 2024-born Kilmallie Kolbe A420 by Fordel Earl Vanguard Y467, from Ewen Campbell, Fort William, which sold to Messrs Campbell, Kelso.

The senior male champion, Deveron Envoy Z960, a June 2023-born son of Rawburn Braw Lad from Hamish Sclater, Turriff, was knocked down for 11,000gns to Messrs Fisher, Bonchester Bridge.

At the same money was March 2024-born Carruthers Escobar A300 by Kersquarter Elgar V333 from D. and K. Graham, Lockerbie, which went home with Messrs Jack, Glenrothes.

Hereford bulls sold to 7,000gns for Auckvale 1 Achiever 2297A, a May 2023-born son of Auckvale Vice Chancellor 2031 from W. and R. Kemp and Sons, Bishop Auckland, which sold to Messrs Gray, Alnwick.

Making 5,000gns was March 2024-born Fellowhills 1 Best Lad by Fisher 1 Tullagi T518, consigned by J. Hodge, Berwick-upon-Tweed, which was knocked down to Messrs Stephenson, Hexham.

Averages: Aberdeen-Angus - 23 bulls, £7,852.17; 1 female, £3,675. Herefords – 7 bulls, £4,500.

Stonehills herd leads Beef Shorthorn trade

The reserve male champion, Stonehills Tonka, a May 2023-born bull from G.L. Riby, Bridlington, topped the sale of Beef Shorthorns at Carlisle at 12,000gns. By Glenisla Nobleman and out of Stonehills Loveley Jason 3, it was knocked down to Messrs Innes and Sons, Aberdeen.

Making 10,500gns was Sandwick Tractorman, an October 2023-born son of Warmington Chalky 285 consigned by A. and C. Ivinson, Ousby, which sold to Messrs Bell and Son, Hawick.

Highsky T-Bone, a November 2023-born bull by Willingham Kensington from Millie Birch, Weston, went home with Messrs Currie and Sons (Jnr), Lanark, for xxxxx.

Females topped at 8,500gns for the reserve female champion, Oakleigh Augusta Top Notch, a July 2023-born heifer by Meonside Pavorotti, consigned by P. Turnbull, Whitby, which sold to Messrs Park, Fort William.

Averages: 10 bulls, £6,678; 1 cow and calf, £6,090; 17 served heifers, £3,699.70; 8 maiden heifers, £3,990; 7 Roadway draft, £2,715; 10 Ballard herd draft, £3,255.
