Luing bulls sell to 24,000gns at Castle Douglas

Averages were up in all sections at the Luing Cattle Society’s premier show and sale at Castle Douglas

The sale topper was Craigdarroch Coe, a heterozygous polled son of Craigdarroch Alves out of a home-bred daughter of Finlarg Nimrod from Wm Graham and Son, Sanquhar, which was bought by Kedzlie Farms, Galashiels.

Two bulls sold for 13,000gns. The first was Craigdarroch Craigie, a homozygous polled son of Kirkland Yorkie, which was knocked down to R. O. Williams and Son, Llanbaber.

The other bull at this money was Nunnerie Crusader, a May 2023-born son of Finlarg Tornado from C. C. MacArthur and Co, Elvanfoot, which sold to Philip and Reece Simmers for their Backmuir herd, Aberdeenshire.

R. H. Bell and Co, Kelso, sold Plenderleith Colonel, a heterozygous polled Tillyrie Yemen son for 11,000gns to John Lawrie, Kinross.

Also making 11,000gns was Blackhouse Cobra by Nunnerie Xenon from T. Renwick and Sons, Yarrow, which went to Messrs Dodd, Lockerbie.

Messrs Graham paid 10,000gns for Allanfauld Clansman, a heterozygous son of Harehead Yoyo from A. MacGregor, Kilsyth.

Females

Females topped at 4,100gns/head for the first prize winning bulling heifers, a May 2023-born pair by Blackhouse Yarrow from D. and A. Barr's Milkieston herd, Peebles, which sold to John Jardine, Dalbeattie. Messrs MacArthur had the top bulling heifer average of £3,518 for four.

In-calf heifers sold to 3,700gns/head for the winning pair of summer 2023-born heifers in-calf to Benhar Yankee and consigned by Robert McNee, Armadale. The buyer was K. Park and Sons, Dalpeddar.

Averages: 16 bulls, £9,371 (+£1,093 on 2024); 32 bulling heifers, £2,983 (+£364); 24 in-calf heifers, £2,843.40 (+£475).

Clearance: Bulls – 80%; heifers – 100%.
