GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW: Suffolk takes supreme title

The supreme championship was awarded to the Suffolk champion, a one-crop ewe from T.J. and C.R. Boden's Sportsmans flock, Stockport, shown by Tom Boden. By Howgillfoot Major and out of a Forkins Dizzy Rascal sired ewe, it was bought from Lilia Hutchinson's Howgillfoot flock at the Three Nations sale at Carlisle last year for 18,000gns.

In reserve was the Dutch Spotted champion, Barquhill Faith, a shearling ewe by Westbroad Diego out of Kilroot Cinnamon shown by Hannah Jackson, Dumfries.

Bought at Carlisle last August for 3,000gns as a foundation ewe for her son Robbie's Rigghead flock, it was also breed champion at the Royal Highland and will next go to the Royal Welsh Show.

The judge, Nigel Hammill, Crumlin, Co Antrim, said the Suffolk ewe ‘oozed breed character' with excellent length, power and bone plus great locomotion and was a worthy winner, but the reserve was a great example of the breed with a good carcase and tremendous ring presence.

The non-MV accredited championship went to Jack Webster, Ashbourne, with the North Country Cheviot champion, Overacres Alert, a four-shear stock ram for his Rivendale flock which he bought privately last year. Lambs from its first crop for Mr Webster were also successful in the breed classes at the show.

Paul Fairburn, Ripon, claimed his first Bluefaced Leicester championship at the show alongside the reserve non-MV accredited title with a home-bred three-shear ewe from his Marriforth flock. By K13 Cottage, it bred a lamb which sold for £12,000 at Hawes last year.

The commercial female championship went to the Mule champion from Graeme Jackson, High Bentham, which had been bought from the Hutchinson family's Hebblethwaite flock at Bentham's second Mule gimmer lamb sale last year.

Josh Lawn, Bradford, who was competing at the show for the first time, took the reserve rosette with his winning pair of cross-bred commercial females, which were Suffolk cross Cheviot shearlings.

Making the final shortlist was the Border Leicester champion, a two-shear Kilpin-bred ewe from Ben and Tori Stanley's Blackbrook flock, Melbourne, which had been bought as a ewe lamb at Carlisle and took the same title last year. They also had the reserve breed champion, a Mearns bred shearling ewe.

The Stanleys claimed the Jacob champion and reserve too, with a home-bred pair of shearling twins - a ram and a ewe, which were out of the 2021 Great Yorkshire breed champion winning ewe.

Badger Face Texel classes were held for the first time and the championship was awarded to Jade Bett, Louth, with a 2021-born ewe from her Yarborough flock. Bought privately from Clive Richardson's Cleenagh flock, Northern Ireland, it was being shown for the first time.

Another to make the final inter-breed lineup was the Berrichon champion, a two-shear ram from Frances Barbour's Newark flock, Dumfries, which was bought from Adrian Bowen's Glynoch flock in 2021.

Chris Brett, who runs 300 Lonks near Rochdale, took the breed championship with a shearling ewe from his Broadleyfold flock.

The Lleyn championship went to T.I.W. Walling, Selkirk, with a home-bred shearling ewe from his Whitlaw flock, which is by an Irish ram that was breed champion at the Royal Highland last year.

Ben Radley, Dumfries, was awarded the Charolais championship with the home-bred shearling ewe, Loaningfoot Abracadabra, a Foxhill Vavavoom daughter out of a Foulrice ewe, which was also breed champion at the Royal Highland Show.
