STIRLING BULL SALES: Beef Shorthorns sell to 20,000gns twice

Beef Shorthorn bulls sold to a high of 20,000gns twice, with averages up £104 on the year for 53 bulls sold at £4,780, and a clearance rate of 61 per cent.

Breed society secretary, Jo Bailey, said she was pleased with the day's trade, and attributed the rise in average on the year to what she said was suckler producers' confidence in Beef Shorthorn's ability to fit the post-Brexit regime and support payment structure.

First to sell to 20,000gns after taking the overall and intermediate championship in the pre-sale show was Coxhill Magnum, consigned by Lucinda Townsend, Moffat.

A son of Ballylinney Glenn and out of Fearn Duke daughter, Ballylinney Graduate 1486, the April 2018-born bull was knocked down to Thistledown Cowford, Perthshire.

At the same money was the intermediate reserve champion, Rookwith Marvellous, an April-2018 born son of Castlemount Junior from E. Page, Rookwith, whose Rookwith herd won the Northern Club herd competition in 2018.

The bull is out of Chapelton Waterloo, a Canvas Yankee daughter, and also stood junior male and reserve male champion at the 2018 Royal Highland Show.

It sold in a two-way split to Robert Leach, Banbury, and Thomas Staunton,  Co Galway.  

Next were two bulls at 11,000gns.The first for Major J.P.O. Gibb, Perth, was Glenisla Macleod, an Millerston Jamboree son out of Glenisla Sally Broadhooks F866. April 2018-born, it sold to Balgay Farms, Perthshire.

At the same money was the Elliot Salute son, Meonside Mufasa, consigned D. and T. Bradley Farmer, Dumfries. The June-2018 bull out of Ballylinney Jen 1011 was knocked down to Gates Farming, Leicestershire.

Knockenjig Morpheus, a March-2018 born son of Fearn Jumpstart took the senior championship before selling for 8,000gns for David and Rosemary Dickie, Dumfries and Galloway. The buyers were W.J. and J. Green, Morayshire.

A second 8,000gns bid was commanded by Fearn Morangie, a 22-month-old Fearn Jono son from J. Scott and Partners, Invernesshire, which sold to A. and C. Farms, Rutland.

Making 7,800gns was another from the same vendors, April 2018-born Fearn Munro. By Fearn Elmer, it went home with D. Baillie, Lanarkshire.

Harry Horrell, Peterborough, secured a 7,000gns bid for Podehole Rock Marquis. The April 2018-born Royalla Rockstar K274 son sold to C.G. Bonner and Son, Buckinghamshire.

Two bulls sold for 6,500gns.

The first was another from Major Gibb, Glenisla Masterton. By Broughton Park Thunder C023, it sold to sale leader Mrs Townsend.

At the same money was Millerston Man O War, a son of Meonhill Charlie Chaplin which sold to Bainabroich Farms, Angus.

Females

A show of eight females sold to an average of £2,690, peaking at 4,600gns for Major Gibb's  Glenisla Desiree.

A 19-month-old heifer by Millerston Jamboree, out of Glenisla Desiree G974, it sold to A. and C. Farms, Rutland.

Next, at 3,200gns, was the pre-sale champion, Uppermill Broadhooks Bang, consigned by James. Porter, Co Down.

One of the first heifers sold by Glenisla Jackpot, the Uppermill Broadhooks Bubbles 2 daughter was purchased by Roundhill Farm, Derbyshire.

Two entries sold for 3,000gns.

The first was Chapelton Duchess 6374, a Critchton Paddy daughter from D.J. Biggar, Castle Douglas, to E. and A.J. Thornber, Halifax.

The second 3,000gns bid was for the reserve female champion, Castlemount Matrix Matilda, a 19-month-old Elliot Matrix daughter from D. McDowell, Newtownards, Co Down. The buyers were R. and K. Williams, Aberdeenshire.
