HOOF blocks can be a useful tool for aiding the healing of cattle foot problems but if used incorrectly they can do more harm than good. Hannah Noble finds out more.

A new Luing breed record of 25,000gns was set at the breed society sale at Castle Douglas for Nunnerie Xenon from C.C. MacArthur and Co, Biggar.

Leading the way at 7,400 at the Farmers Guardian supported sale of show potential beef calves at Brecon was the Limousin cross steer, Prince of Thieves, from Phil and Tracey Jones and family, Erwood, Powys.

The reserve senior champion led the Limousin trade at 13,500gns, which finished with an average up 130 on the year at 4,730.34 for 59 animals sold, and a clearance rate of 81 per cent.

A packed ringside saw Aberdeen-Angus bulls sell to a high of 25,000gns, matching last year’s top call.

Beef Shorthorn bulls sold to a high of 20,000gns twice, with averages up 104 on the year for 53 bulls sold at 4,780, and a clearance rate of 61 per cent.

The show and sale of in-lamb females and gimmer hoggs at J36 included the Rough Diamond sale on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association where a new record of 1,450gns was set for the reserve champion.

A top price 10,000gns was reached twice at the Blue British Society show and sale.

SENIOR cows led the dispersal sale of Greenyards pedigree Herefords at Hereford market on behalf of Phil and Alison Allman, Herefordshire, peaking at 10,200gns for the five-year-old cow Greenyards 1 Truelove M314.
