Bluefaced Leicester breed record smashed at Hawes

The Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders Association show and sale at Hawes drew visitors from all parts of the country who witnessed a new breed record of £88,000 set

Bluefaced Leicester breed record smashed at Hawes

The record breaker was the pre-sale show champion was a ram lamb by Marriforth V34, bought at Carlisle last year for £3,200, out of a ewe by V45 Hewgill, from Messrs Lord's Hewgill flock, North Stainmore.

It sold to a consortium of local breeders, W.M. Hutchinson, Kirkby Redgate, W. Richardson and Son, Dufton, and Robbie Hallam, High Birkwith. 

The next two lambs from the same pen, both by the same sire as the sale leader, sold for £12,000 and £14,000 respectively. The first went to Midlock Farms, Biggar, and E. Fairburn and Sons, Ripon, and the second to W.C. Porter and Sons, and J. Allison and Sons, both Richmond. Messrs Lord's eight rams averaged £16,800.

Midlock Farms had the second top price of £32,000 for a ram lamb by Midlock V7 which had Royal Highland Show champions on both sides of its pedigree.

The buyers were Obie Sharp, Newbigging Walls flock, Lauder, and Messrs Campbell, Happrew flock, Peebles.

Midlock Farms, also saw a bid of £20,000 for a lamb by the V1 Cottage, which was bought for £28,000 last year out of Hawes which sold to the Hodgson-McGill family, Windermere. The Midlock pen averaged £8,608 for 12 ram lambs.

Making £28,000 was a son of £10,000 Steel, last year's Hawes champion, from W.C. Porter's Riddings flock, Richmond, which was knocked down to Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle for the Cottage flock, Lanark, and Finlay Robertson, Beeches flock, West Calder.

Alec and Anders Brown achieved their best price to date of £24,000 for their Macqueston flock, Thornill, with a lamb by V14 Hewgill which sold to Messrs Pye, Lancaster, and Chris Hewitt, Eskewbeck.

Messrs Bell and Buckle sold a son of W2 Cottage for £22,000 to Stephen Pedley, Yore House flock, Kirkby Stephen, and Shaun Proctor, Spurrigg flock, Kirkby Stephen.  

Also making £22,000 was a lamb by T1 Spurrigg from M.R. Thornborrow's Dawyck flock, Peebles, which sold to A. and J.A. Iveson, Hawes.

Averages - 501 ram lambs, £2,934 (+£346 on 2025); 13 aged rams, £2,530; 2 ewes, £3,250; 19 shearling gimmers, £1,368; 19 gimmer lambs, £644.
