Stirling Bull Sales: Backmuir Vodka breaks Beef Shorthorn record

Beef Shorthorn bulls set a new record of 40,000gns at the first Stirling February showcase. With 55 bulls sold, the trade averaged £9,234, up £2,758 on the year

Leading the Beef Shorthorn trade and setting the new breed record was Backmuir Vodka, the reserve overall champion from Reece Simmers, Keith. 

Known for running the Backmuir Simmental herd, Mr Simmers is new to the breed and marked his first time selling a Beef Shorthorn bull.  

The Glenisla Saturn son was purchased privately in utero from a neighbouring farmer, along with the rest of the pedigree Beef Shorthorn herd, which stands at 15 cows. 

The record breaker sold to Aucheneck Estates, Killearn.

Next at 24,000gns was Cutthorn Vision, a March 2024-born bull from Alastair Gibson, County Durham. Marking Mr Gibson's best price to date, it was knocked down to the David Leggat, Logiealmond.

Balquhadly Vanguard, a July 2024-born bull from Alice and Alan Haigh, Brechin, sold for 22,000gns. Previously placing male champion at Fife Show and native junior inter-breed champion at Perth Show, it went home with Tom Bradley-Farmer, Dumfries.

Making 17,000gns was Portnadoran Viscount, from Audrey MacDonald, Arisaig. Previously placing breed champion at the Royal Highland Show it was sold to the Landers family, Newton Stewart.

Also at 17,000gns was Glenisla Venture, from Major John Gibb and his daughter Catriona, Perthshire. By the home-bred bull Glenisla Sunrise, it went home with James Porter, Dromore.

The reserve intermediate champion Van Gough of Upsall, from the team at Upsall Castle Farms, Thirsk, was next at 16,000gns. Out of Tessa X844 of Upsall, the oldest cow in the herd, it was knocked down to J. Thomson, Brampton.

Two bulls sold to 14,000gns. The first at this money was another from the Upsall Castle Farms consignment and the senior champion, Vagabond of Upsall. Breed champion at last year's Great Yorkshire Show, it was knocked down to the Firm of Shawhead, Shawhead.  

Male champion Coxhill Valour, from Lucinda Townsend, Moffat, also sold for 14,000gns. By Meonside Nidavellir, it went home with S. Davidson, Peterhead.  

A further two bulls sold for 13,000gns. In first was another from Mr Simmer's Backmuir consignment, Backmuir Viper. It sold to Ian Green, Fochabers.  

Tom Bradley Farmer was next at this money, with a May 2024-born bull Meonside Vice Captain. By Highsky Roger, it was knocked down to Eastmill Farm, Blairgowrie.  

Next at 11,500gns was Stonehills Va Va Voom, from Geoff Riby, Fraisthorpe. By Glenisla Nobleman, it went home with Kirsty Oakes, Wendling.  

Topping the trade at 6,500gns for Beef Shorthorn females was Tom Bradley Farmer, Dumfries, with Meonside Catriona Rosebud Viz. By Podehole Piper which has bred sons to 18,000gns, it sold to D. and A.C. Shakeshaft, Shropshire.  

Next at 5,600gns was Headlind Holly Nutmeg, a third calver from Allan Jackson, Lanark, which sold to Netherwood Beef Shorthorns, Banknock.  

Hyndford Victoria, a July 2024-born heifer from Ian Tennant, Lanark, sold for 4,200gns. It went home with Sandringham Estates, Norfolk.

55 bulls, £9,234 average (+£2,758 on 2025); 9 females, £4,083 average.
