Bombay turns up the heat to 18,000gns at Castle Douglas Belted Galloway sale

With buyers in attendance from all across the UK, Belted Galloways were in demand at Castle Douglas as five lots broke the five-figure barrier and a new female record was set

Leading the way at 18,000gns was the male champion from the pre-sale show, Castleton Bombay from Castleton Farms, Dollar. This 18-month-old by the 14,000gns Grassknop Idris had previously stood reserve junior male at the Royal Highland. Bred from Thornthwaite Malinda, a Lullenden Scotch Mist Daughter, Bombay sold to Bill, Jane and Bobby Landers for their Cairnsmore herd, Newton Stewart

Two sold for 16,000gns apiece including James Rebanks' similarly aged Racy Ghyll Hemingway which sold to Glen Farm for the Glen herd, Gatehouse of Fleet. This second prize winner is by Mochrum Colonel and out of the Speddoch Rocky-sired Lomond Dinky, making it a full brother to the 20,000gns Racy Ghyll Jay Z sold last year.

Messrs Rebanks, Penrith, welcomed a further 10,000gns for Racy Ghyll Odysseus which this time is by Romesbeoch Raymond and out of Mochrum Laburnum 14^th. It sold back to Cumbria with Messrs Richardson, Stonehouse herd.

Matching that 16,000gns and setting a new female record was the overall champion, Dornells Lucky from James Jack, Dornells herd, Castle Douglas. Selling to James Rebanks, Lucky is by Dornells Duke and out of Glen Connie which is in turn by Coulmony Harris.

At 14,000gns was Croft Easter Bonnet, an in-calf heifer from Katie Keiley, Dalbeattie. Sired by Saltway Zebedee and out of Croft Jubilation, Easter Bonnet sold to Mervyn Foster, Elgany herd, West Midlands, served by Tobergill Yuist.

Making 6,000gns when sold to Allan and Susan Campbell for their Crawlaw herd, Ayrshire, was Cairnsmore Ur Tilly Madelyn from Messrs Landers.

A small offering of White Galloways peaked at 3,400gns for Bergere Buttercup 9^th, a Blackcraig Kodiac daughter from Tom Trafford, Cockermouth. It sold to M Fletcher, Warrington, with its heifer calf at foot by Onzibust Rincewind and back in calf to the same sire.

Averages - Belted Galloways – 15 bulls, £7,070; 1 in-calf cow, £4,830; 5 in-calf heifers, £6,321; 17 bulling heifers, £3,551; 23 maiden heifers, 2,556. White Galloways – 1 bulling heifer, £1,365; 1 maiden heifer, £3,360; 6 cows and calves, 2,450.
