Champion and reserve top South Country Cheviots

The overall average improved by nearly £24 on the year, but the reserve claimed the top price ahead of the overall champion at the sale of South Country Cheviots at Lockerbie.

Selling for £20,000 to Messrs Warden, Hawick, was the second prize two-shear ram by Glendinning Goliath, from Messrs Weir's Mainside flock, Kelso.

Messrs Warden's winning two-shear by Kale Dynamite from their Skelfhill flock sold for £18,000 to Messrs Paton, Thornhill.

Selling to the Common family's Crossdykes flock near Lockerbie for £14,000 was a Skelfhill Sovereign-sired shearling from Jim Robertson's Becks flock, Langholm.

 Averages114 two-shear rams, £1,816.23; 265 shearling rams, £1,500.94; 379 overall, £1,598.81.

Jalex heifers sell to £17,000

A TOP of £17,000 was paid at James Alexander's Jalex Select heifer sale held on-farm in Northern Ireland.

That was paid by Messrs Lynn, Co Antrim, for Bold Beauty, a 21-month-old British Blue cross Charolais heifer by Patissier de la Grande Rose, which sold scanned with a heifer calf to The Grove Farm P381.

Making £12,500 to Messrs McGill, Co Omagh, was a pure British Blue by Almeley Lightning in-calf to the same sire.

Graham Cameron, Argyll, paid £12,000 and £10,000 for two Blue cross heifers carrying male calves to the easy calving P381 bull.

Dearest of the bulls at £7,200 when sold to Messrs Heery, County Cavan, was Jalex VIS, a 17-month-old Graiggoch Rambo son.

 Averages - 152 in-calf heifers, £5,242.99; 3 bulling heifers, £7,333.33; 3 cows and heifers with calves, £6,200; 6 bulls, £4,583.33.

Sheep dog centre record set at Skipton

A YOUNG bitch with a pedigree full of trials champions set a new centre record at Skipton when Dewi Jenkins' Plascwta Jen sold for 23,000gns.

Hailing from Dewi's base near Aberystwyth, Jen is sired by Dewi's own Clwyd Bob which was crowned supreme at the International trial held in September, while its dam is Osian Williams' Nantcydros Flyte which has Welsh National and International champions in its pedigree.

An online bid of 15,000gns quickly rose to 23,000gns to set a new centre record as Jen sold to Samantha Jo Furman of FrontRunner Border Collies in Virginia where she will be a work dog and hopefully compete at some trials.

First time vendor, Alastair Walker, from near Hamilton, sold his three-year-old black and white bitch named Tweeddale Kate for 7,000gns to Tom Hill and Ruby Wright, Doncaster. Its sire is Sandy McCulloch's Sam while its dam is Deam Aitken's Tweeddale Jill.

Another bitch, Stuart Walton's Brackenholme Dolly from Carlton, Selby, made 5,000gns selling to Dwayne Shiels, Letterkenny, County Donegal. Its pedigree includes Spango Jim which goes back to Derwen Doug, and Brackenholme Rita.

Local consignor, Shawn Richards, from Eldront, sold his Bearded Collie cross for 4,600gns to J.E. Brown, Glanton.

At 4,200gns was Ruby from Jake Williams, Wrexham, which sold to H. Owen, Cheshire. Ruby is by A.P. Ward's Gyp and sold mated to Dewi Jenkins' High Hills Jo.

Roy Canning, Keighley sold a pair of 14-month-old littermates for 4,000gns and 3,5000gn by his own Rock and out of High Ash Jet to the Bouch family, Kirkoswald, Cumbria, and Richard Crowe, Isle of Wight, respectively.

In the unbroken pen,  A. Dawidowicz, Carnforth, led the way with two youngsters at 1,000gns and 900gns.

Averages - Broken dogs - registered bitches, £6,095; registered dogs, £1,659. Unbroken dogs - registered dogs, £874.00.

Ewe lambs top Sharps Suffolks

EWE lambs led the way at the Sharp family's offering of Suffolk females from their Bristol Gold Cup Champion flock, on-farm at Tenbury Wells.

Selling for the top price of 10,000gns was a January-born single ewe out of a Sportsmans ewe by Salopian Solid Gold and by Annakisa Champ. It sold to Charlie Boden, Stockport.

Making 8,000gns to Vaughan Farms, Leominster, was a January-born ewe lamb by Conchar Cruiser.

Two more Conchar Cruiser-sired ewe lambs sold for 4,500gns – one to Vaughan Farms and the other to Vaughan Partridge, Newcastle Under Lyne – while a Cairness Cooper-sired lamb also made 4,500gns, to Messrs Evans, Clwyd.

Vaughan Farms paid 3,000gns for the dearest of the older females, a Sharps Skylark-sired gimmer AI'd to Conchar Cruiser.

 Averages - 41 flock ewes, £838.71; 15 shearling gimmers, £1,323; 24 ewe lambs, £2,489.37; 6 rams, £542.50.

Derbyshire Gritstones peak at 5,500gns

The Derbyshire Gritstone Sheep Society show and sale at Clitheroe peaked at 5,500gns for a shearling ram from Paul Dixon, Huddersfield, which sold to K. and S. Kempson and Son, Waterfoot.

Next at 5,000gns was a shearling ram from J. and M. Redfearn, Stockport, which was knocked down to C. Mitchell, Holmfirth.

The pre-sale show champion was a shearling ram from Messrs Mitchell which made 2,500gns to F. Shorrock, Cliviger. Reserve champion was a three-shear Eggleton bred ram from Messrs Kempson which sold to N. Pepper, Langshaw Bridge.

Ram lambs topped at 2,000gns for J. Eggleton, Bradford, selling to Messrs Mitchell. The first prize winner from M. and M. Tattersall, Rossendale, sold for 1,300gns.

Messrs Kempson topped the females at £2,600 twice for the champion and reserve, shearling ewes, which both sold to J. Fisher, Keswick.
Ewe lambs sold to £520 for S.A. Charles, Buxton, selling to A.C. Hayton, Kendall.

Averages – 20 ewes, £245; 66 shearling ewes, £331.44; 50 ewe lambs, £170.24; 22 aged rams, £522.61; 70 shearling rams, £767.81; 31 ram lambs, £574.79.

Elmscleugh tops at Stirling

A TOP of £45,000 plus five more five-figure prices resulted in a boost in averages of more than £100 for south-type Blackface rams at Stirling.

The Dunlop family's Elmscleugh flock, Dunbar, led both the shearling ram and lamb ram trade. Sale topper when sold to C.C. MacArthur,  Biggar, was a shearling by a home-bred son of a £60,000 Dyke.Second best at £35,000 was a son of a £32,000 Dyke from Alan McClymont, Kirkstead, Yarrow, which sold to Dan Walton, Alston.

Elmscleugh's lamb leader at £19,000 was by a home-bred son of a £22,000 Allanfauld and sold to Nunnerie as well as Alan Wight, Biggar.

Perth type

A shearling ram by a £20,000 Woolfords, from Mairi Paterson and grand-son, Robert's Craigneigh flock, Comrie, topped the Perth Ram Society sale at £4,000 when sold to David Baillie, Carnwath.  Selling for £3,500 to Phil Stewart, Drummuir, was a son of a £3,200 Woolfords from the Shearer family, Glenlivet.
North type lambs sold to a top of £1,500 for one from Ben MacKinnon's Mause flock. It is sired by a £3,200 Woolfords and was knocked down to Messrs Smith, Scarhill, Glenkindie.

Averages - South type – 578 shearling rams, £1,544.98; 91 ram lambs, £1,043.30. North type – 166 shearling rams, £1,037.95; 34 ram lambs, £644.71.

Store cattle average up at Hexham

An entry of 652 store cattle went under the hammer at the Farmers Guardian-supported show and sale at Hexham.
The younger cattle claimed the leading prices, with the average up £622/head on the same sale in the previous year.
Trade peaked at £3,400 for a 14-month-old Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Lee, Agars Hill, who sold another at £3,100 with their run of 42 calves averaging £2,269 – a rise of £710/head on the year.

Messrs Common, Low Ardley, sold 49 Limousin cross calves to average £2,216/head – up £720/head on last year.

John, Andrew and Steven Reed, Westgate-in-Weardale, sold 12-month-old steers to £2,540 and heifers to £2,280 to average £2,344 for 41 head, which was a lift of £701 on 2024.

Hexham champion

The pre-sale show championship went to the winning Limousin cross steer from Messrs Thompson, East Unthank, with reserve going to the winning Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Lee.
Both sold for £2,750, with the champion going to the judge, Neil Brand, Auchtermuchty, and the reserve to Declan Foley, Capheaton.  

Limousin steers consigned by Cockburn Brothers, Peebles, topped at £2,480, with their heifers selling to £2,580, to average £2,152.

Michael Reed, Frosterley, had several prize-winners – his steers peaked at £2,460 and his heifers at £2,360.

Forward store cattle sold to £2,900 for a heifer from Messrs Hamilton, Claywalls, and £2,760 for a steer from Messrs Thompson, Tow Law.

Hampshire Downs in demand at Exeter

HAMPSHIRE Downs met a 100% clearance rate at Exeter where two from the Derryman family's Yarcombe flock topped the entry at 2,300gns and 2,100gns.

Making top dollar for the Devonshire flock was a shearling ewe by Treworthal Marshall and out of a dam by Yarcombe Hero. Selling in-lamb to Graylen The Jackal, it heads to Suffolk to join Messrs Middleditch's St Paul flock.

Messrs Derryman's champion from the pre-sale show, another by Treworthal Marshall, but this time out of a Parkstock ewe, sold to Shaun and Charles Carter for their Bishopscourt flock, Ottery St Mary. It sold in-lamb to Lawshall Thor which has a TSI of 357.

A pair of Yarcombe ewe lambs by Graylen The Jackal and out of Millfield Sargeant daughters led the ewe lamb trade at 700gns apiece with both of these selling to Joe and Sophie Dilibero for their Seawell flock, Northamptonshire.

Champion heads up Herdwicks at Cockermouth

LEADING the way at the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association show and sale at Cockermouth was a two-shear ram from Stanley Jackson, that claimed the championship before selling for the top price of £16,000.

Selling to S. Hill, Little Cross, the two-shear from Stanley and wife, Carole, Aspatria, is by a Jono Hogarth ram shared with Andrew Nicholson and Jonny Bland, while its dam is a Langstrath stock ewe Stanley took with him from his former Nook Farm holding.

Notably, the reserve champion, a shearling ram from Andrew and Karen Nicholson, Cockermouth, was also by the Jono Hogarth tup and sold to A.D. Harrison, Brotherilkeld, for £5,200.

Peter Bland, Knott Houses, achieved the second highest price with a £10,000 sale, with Brookfield selling one to £8,500 and Messrs Nicholsons' entry topped at £7,500.

The previous day, the champion pen of ewes from Robert Wilkinson and Rachel Tennant, Gatesgarth, topped the female offering at £700/head for a pen of five that sold to L. Ward, Lancaster.

The same home sold further entries from their dispersal to £520 for ewes with gimmer shearlings to £480 and gimmer lambs to 260.

Strong demand for Dalesbreds

SEVERAL rams broke the £5,000 barrier at the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Association sale at Bentham.

Leading the way at £8,500 was a shearling ram from John Bradley, Giggleswick, which sold to J.D. Lambert, Settle.

The champion ram from J.T. and K. Kelsall, Clapham, followed close behind at £8,000 when knocked down in a two-way split to Messrs Bainbridge, Richmond, and C. Lancaster, Leyburn.

Mr Bradley sold another shearling for £6,000 and paid the same money for the first prize small breeders ram from J. Carr and J. Moran, Wigglesworth.

Aged rams peaked at £2,500 from joint owners J.J. Dawson and John Bradley selling to Messrs Greenwood, Halifax, while a handful of ram lambs reached £400 from both R. Lancaster, Pendleton, and Joe Gorst, Killington.

A draft ewe record of £900 was paid for the first prize pair from Mr Bradley which sold to Luke and Lewis Staley, Kirkby Stephen.

The same home led the shearlings at £300 with a trio, while gimmer lambs reached £270 for C. Bell, Barnard Castle.

Champion leads at Louth store cattle

AT the autumn show and sale of suckled calves and store cattle at Louth, it was the champion that went on to sell for the top price of £2,650.

The judge, James Holmes, Apley, backed his decision to buy his champion which was an 18-month-old Limousin cross heifer from Kevin Smith, P.K. Farms, Friskney.

The same home produced the reserve champion, a 19-month-old Limousin cross bullock which made £2,460.

A run of Limousin cross stores from C.H.J. Waite, Newball, reached £2,100, while entries from M.D. Reeves sold to £2,000.

Suckled calves peaked at £1,880 for eight-month-old Limousin cross steers from R.H. and M.S. Borrill, Immingham, while F.W. Tobinson and Son, Horsington, sold similar sorts to £1,780.

Averages - Bulls, £1,708; steers, £1,442.11; heifers, £1,337.15.

Auchenleck herd reached 3,700gns

WITH buyers from all over the UK, the dispersal of the Marshall family's Auchenleck Holstein Friesian herd from South West Scotland sold to a top of 3,700gns.

That was paid for a heifer in-milk by Denovo Sargent which was recently calved and sold to the Ramsay family, Stranraer.

Messrs Ramsay bought a further five females for 3,600gns apiece including a Koepen Raptor-sired third calver giving 40.2kg and another second calver by the same sire yielding 43.4kg; two second calvers by Het Ken Gray recording 33.2kg and 34.6kg; and a Bomaz Vader-sired second calver giving 35.7kg.

Also selling to Messrs Ramsay, this time for 3,500gns, was a September-calved heifer by Denovo Sargent.

Two more sold for 3,500gns – an ABS Titus daughter to Messrs Harrison, Penrith, and a Denovo Sargant daughter to Messrs Fisher, Kirkcudbright.

In-calf heifers reached 3,200gns for another by Denovo Sargent which also sold to Messrs Fisher.

Averages - 137 cows in-milk, £2,259.03; 16 heifers in-milk, £2,825.15; 9 faulted cows, £1,411.67; 39 in-calf heifers, £2,538.85.
