Allspice tops Ladies in Red Limousins

The Ladies in Red sale of Limousin females at Ballymena for the Northern Ireland Limousin Cattle Club topped at 25,000gns for Nugent Allspice, an eight-month-old ET bred heifer from Charlie Beverland, Nugent Estate, Portaferry.

By Huntersallh Nutcracker, its dam is Grahams Overlynice, a full sister to the 250,000gns world record-breaker Wilodge Posh Spice, the heifer sold to Gareth Corrie, Newtownards, setting a joint Northern Ireland female record.

Next at 18,000gns was the intermediate and reserve supreme champion, Ampertaine Vilie, a 13-month-old Ampertaine Elgin daughter out of Ampertaine Millie from James McKay, Maghera. The buyer was David Evans, Ceredigion.

Geoffrey and Elizabeth Rodgers and family, Dromara, secured the junior and supreme overall championship with Draperhill Valarie.

This yearling heifer has double Q204X genes and was one of the first daughters offered for sale from herd sire Huntershall Rodman. It sold to Peter McKeague, Millisle.

Next at 15,000gns was the reserve intermediate champion, Cranmoney Vee, bred by Mark McCartan, Crossgar. The 15-month-old heifer by Graiggoch Rambo has F94L and Q204X myostatin genes and sold to N. Feeney, Carnlough.

Averages - 26 heifers, £7,386 (-£726 on 2024).

Mac leads Dolgellau dogs at £12,900

An entry of 156 working sheepdogs and pups were forward at Dolgellau's August timed auction of working sheepdogs, which saw many part-trained dogs and bitches sell above £5,000 and a clearance rate of 76%.

Sale leader at £12,900 was Mac, a fully-trained two-and-a-half-year-old dog from D. Nevin, Glencarrick Sheepdogs, Co Mayo, which sold to a USA-based buyer.

At £12,000 was High Hills Sali, a fully-trained bitch from Dewi Jenkins, Talybont, with Sal, a fully-trained bitch from David Wood, Derwent, making £10,800, and selling to a new home in the Faroe Islands.

A bid of £6,700 led in the partly-trained section for Cass, a two-year-old bitch from Ellis Rees, Rhayader, with Owain Jenkins, Trefeglwys, selling his partly-trained bitch Kate for £6,200. Beara Valley Mia from Tim Nicholas, Barnstaple, sold for £5,250.

Topping the pup section at £5,250 was four-month-old bitch Jen, from Dewi Jenkins, with Gwydr Jill from the same home making £3,650.

Averages - Trained, £5,608; partly trained, £2,387; pups, £1,292, overall, £3,120.

Nethervalley Nexgen sells to 10,000gns high

The Nethervalley Nexgen sale of pedigree Holsteins and select Jerseys, hosted by Robbie and Margo Scott at Shacklehill Farm, Mossblown, Ayrshire, saw a top bid of 10,000gns.

Sale leader was Knowlesmere Chief Brittany, an April-calved heifer which stood reserve All-Britain Heifer in 2024. By Stantons Chief, out of TLC Jordy Britany, the buyers were Messrs McNeil, Lochans, Stranraer.

Nethervalley Pharo Sara was next at 8,100gns. By Sandy-Valley J Pharo, its grand dam, Nethervalley Kingpin Sara, sold for 10,000gns at the Black and White sale in 2019. It sold to to Neil Sloan for Knoweside Holsteins, Auchinleck, Ayrshire.

A 7,800gns bid secured Nethervalley Rager Miss Lolli, sold due in November to Holehouse Farms, Kilbirnie.

A Ri-Val-Re Rager-Red daughter, its grand dam and third dam both classify EX93. There were four 7,000gns bids which secured Nethervalley Applicable Elegance – a Stantons Applicable daughter which sold to Cairnpat Holsteins, Stranraer, who also paid the same money for Nethervalley Doc Inka Ideal, a Woodcrest King Doc daughter.

At the same money was Nethervalley Kingdoc Rozelle, another King Doc daughter which sold to Messrs Veitch, Mauchline, Ayrshire. The fourth at 7,000gns was Aliann SH Elegance by Siemers Avz Hanley which sold to Messrs Shepherd, Bakewell.

Averages - 51 heifers in-milk, £4,405.88; 50 cows in-milk, £3,308.55; 24 in-calf heifers, £3,031.88; 34 short-bred heifers, £2,600.29; 35 bulling heifers, £1,656; 38 heifer calves, £2,173.22.

Dairy to £3,880 at Market Drayton

A top price of £3,880 was realised in Market Drayton's August dairy show and sale, with heifers selling to £3,550 and £3,150.

Sale leader was a Heathleigh Brekem Cinderella, a calved heifer from L. Horton and Sons, Northwich.

Heifers from Stubbs Partners, Whitgreave, sold for £3,550, with R.G. Swain, Shavington, selling heifers to £3,150 and A.D. and R.M. Thomas, Leicestershire to £2,950.

A £3,500 bid secured the champion pedigree cow, Atwood Dumbledore Prue, a second calver from J. Lomax and Son, Baldwins Gate.

Messrs Horton also sold their first prize pedigree heifer, Heathleigh Skyline Reneke, for £3,500.

Ayrshire heifers from S.N. Bailey and Partners, Crewe, sold to £2,800.

Averages - 12 fresh cows, £2,670; 44 fresh heifers, £2,192.

Dairy entries strong at Penrith

A dairy entry of 101 head was put forward at Penrith's late summer show and sale of dairy cattle, where bidding reached £4,100 and 12 animals sold for more than £3,000.

Top price was for the day's overall champion, Churchroyd Autumn 7, from I.R.G. Collins, Dewsbury, which sold giving 36 litres having recently calved with its third. The buyer was H.M. Dent, Darlington.

A £3,900 bid secured the first-placed Holstein Friesian heifer from D.W. Cannon and Son, Penrith, which sold giving 26 litres to H. and E.M. Hunter, Berrier.

Another £3,900 bid secured another for Messrs Dent from R.W. and J. Bell, Kirkbride, this one being a second calved cow giving 35 litres.

The same home also sold their champion British Friesian, a freshly-calved heifer for £3,550 to T.J. and J.M. Powley, Penrith.

Store cattle to £2,785 

Store cattle at Penrith sold to a £2,785 high for a 27-month-old Limousin bullock from M.T.P. and S.D. Wills, Appleby-in-Westmorland, which sold to R. Dickinson.

Messrs Wills also took top price in the heifer section, with a £2,725 bid for a 23-month-old Limousin cross, again selling to Messrs Dickinson. This consignment of 12 averaged £2,694.17.

Dairy-bred bullocks topped at £2,665 for a 25-month-old Aberdeen-Angus cross Montbeliarde from S. and W. Maughan, Ainstable, selling to David Barker, Scarborough, with this home selling a pen of four to £2,515 and a pen of seven to £2,435, with 15 selling in total to average £2,451.67.

T.J. and J.M. Powley, Penrith, sold 11 Limousin bullocks out of Holstein cows at 20–24 months to average £2,369.55, topping at £2,545.
