Golden globe and Emmy Award-winning actor Damian Lewis has driven sheep over the River Thames in London as part of a tradition dating back hundreds of years.

More than 1000 Freemen of the City herded their sheep across Southwark Bridge on September 29, alongside Mr Lewis, known for his roles in works such as Homeland and Wolf Hall.

The event celebrates a Freeman's ancient ‘right' to bring sheep to market over the Thames, toll free; all in aid of raising funds for The Woolmen Charity and The Lord Mayor's Appeal.

Mr Lewis, who is a Freeman of the City, said the event would be a ‘career highlight' as a ‘proud London Welshman'.

Manny Cohen, master woolman, Worshipful Company of Woolmen, said: "I am really pleased to welcome Damian Lewis and the Lord Mayor to our annual Sheep Drive across the Thames during my year as Master Woolman.

"The event, which has been running for over a decade, has raised lots of money for charity, as well as donating funds to the Lord Mayor's Appeal."

Michael Mainelli, Lord Mayor of London said: "I am delighted to join the Worshipful Company of Woolmen in taking part in this year's Sheep Drive over Southwark Bridge. This is a significant event in the City of London calendar and allows the public to learn more about the City Liveries and the wool trade.

"Wool played an important role in the history of the UK and the City and continues to connect us with our international partners around the world. Besides that, the day is also a lot of fun for all those taking part and coming down to watch."
