Clarkson's Farm return boosts demand for British produce

Online supermarket Ocado said the launch of the new show had led to an increase in sales of British pork and Lion's Mane mushrooms

New supermarket data, shows a significant sales increase for British produce, following the release of the popular TV show – Clarkson's Farm – which has returned to our screens for the third series.

The programme follows Jeremy Clarkson on his journey in running his 1,000-acre, Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, with the latest episodes seeing Mr Clarkson introduce pigs for the first time.

The data was released by Ocado, the online supermarket – with a joint venture between Marks and Spencer and Ocado, who released their new Best of British aisle earlier this year.

Sales of British pork products, including sausages, bacon and gammon, have soared with ‘M&S Select Farms 12 Free Range Pork Chipolatas' at a 134 per cent increase in sales, following the release of the new episode. 

Produce trading manager at Ocado retail, Martha Springham, said: "Programmes like Clarkson's Farm show consumers just how hard Britain's farmers work, so it is brilliant to see our customers supporting them."

Another introduction to the farm has been Lion's Mane mushrooms, which Mr Clarkson is growing and selling in his Diddly Squat Farm shop.

Ocado data shows searches for Lions mane increased by 482 per cent this week.

With consumer demand for organic and sustainable produce growing, Ocado and the Soil Association have announced a new project to provide education to British farmers on nature and climate friendly food production at five demo farms across the UK.

Covering a wide range of nature-friendly farming techniques, including agroforestry, restoring hedgerows and using more diverse crop rotations.

Ms Springham said: "Sales of British produce, from pork loin to kefir, to mushrooms have risen drastically since we launched Ocado's Best of British aisle, which contains more than 800 quality products spanning fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and dairy.

"British produce is among the best in the world, and we will always do what we can to champion it."
