Kirkby Classic sale of show potential cattle tops at £3,200

The Farmers Guardian supported Kirkby Classic show and sale of show potential cattle at Kirkby Stephen topped at £3,200 with the 61 show cattle averaging £2,218.18

 The sale leader was the winning British Blue sired unhalterd heifer from Will and Gillian Sedgley, Barbon, Kirkby Lonsdale. The buyer was Messrs Park, Ireton.

In the pre-sale show the championship was dominated by bullocks with judge, Paul Tippetts, Shifnal, choosing as supreme the winner of the Limousin sired class. This was Starstruck, an April 2023 born bullock by Kinniside Mobydick out of a Limousin cross British Blue cow from T. Laird and Son, Cumnock, and shown by Shona Stevenson. Already a big winner in the show ring having been second at AgriExpo and junior bullock champion at Stars of the Future Calf Show, it was knocked down for £3,000 to Richard Naylor, Kirk Langley.

The reserve champion was the second prize winning Limousin sired bullock, a May 2023 born son of Waindale UFO consigned by John Smith-Jackson, Haltwhistle. It sold for £2,700 to Georgina Laws, Leyburn.

Also selling for £3,000 was the winning British Blue heifer, a June 2023-born pedigree daughter of Cromwell Oreo from J.H. Pedley, Carnforth, which sold to David Parkin, Scunthorpe.

The winning Limousin sired heifer from B. and L. Wilkinson, Leyburn, sold for £2,800 to Mr Naylor.

Making £2,700 was the winning unhaltered Limousin sired bullock from K. and G.J. Huck, Austwick, which sold to A. Ewing, Annan.

Averages - steers, £1,488.08 (+ £262.70 on 2023); heifers, £1,423.75 (+245.46); overall, £1,457.23 (+£250.38 for 69 more cattle sold).
