RHS21: Moralee leads Royal Highland native judging

It was a victory for team Moralee at the end of a very different first day of this year's Royal Highland proceedings.

With the cattle judging split into native and continental sections this year, it was Hereford champion Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks from Tom and Di Harrison's Northumberland based herd that took the top spot in the overall native inter-breed judging.

Three year-old Rebel is by the Hereford Sire of the Year 2019, Danish-bred SMH Kingsize 87K and out of Romany 1 Dawn, a dam bought from Kelso-based Robert Wilson and also stood as one half of the reserve champion native pairs outfit, alongside its herd mate, Moralee 1 Pippa,

Claiming the reserve native inter-breed title was Galloway champion Blackcraig Dora May, a nine-year old cow from John and Ann Finlay's 150-cow herd in Corsock, Castle Douglas. The Blackcraig Rasputin daughter, which the pair sold a £6,000 half share of to Troloss Farms several years ago, was shown with its September 2020-born heifer calf at foot.

The Aberdeen Angus champion was Weeton Blackbird V519 from Brailes Livestock, Moreton-In-Marsh, which also topped the native pairs championship alongside Donald Rankin's one year old bull, Kilmaluag Lord Blackbeauty W288.

Bought out of the Weeton dispersal in October-2019 for £3,800, Blackbird was brought out by Richard Rettie and shown in-calf to Brailes Fabulous. It is destined for the Great Yorkshire show and Aberdeen Angus Summer National show at Westmorland later this year.

Headlind Partners, Lanarkshire, dominated the Beef Shorthorn judging, scooping the breed championship with their seven year old Langalbuinoch Barney son, Dunsyre Horatio.

In the Belted Galloway judging, Huntfield Twiggy, a five year old cow from J. and Z. Kirk, Dumfries and Galloway, took the top spot. By Southfield Major Ronaldo, out of Huntfield Redbull daughter, Huntfield Quip, it was shown with its April-2021 born bull calf at foot.

Gusgurlach of Balmoral, a two year old bull from Her Majesty The Queen's Balmoral fold, Aberdeenshire, claimed the Highland championship. A home-bred Tomintoul of Glamis Castle son out of Bhadair Ruadh 44 of Balmoral, Gusgurlach resides with Balmoral's 65-head herd and will be used as a stock bull of the future.

Leading the Lincoln Red section was St Fort Yeovil from Andrew Mylius, St. Fort. A home-bred Walmer Troy son, it was brought out by Richard Retty.
