Auction mart sales round-up: Pedigree Holstein to 11,000gns; Aberdeen-Angus production sale, pedigree sheep showcase to £8,200 and Gisburn dairy to £3,700

A round-up of this week's livestock sales, including on-farm production sales for Holstein and Aberdeen-Angus breeds, Gisburn dairy and Carlise online sales

Ryder Tickle Red tops Legends of Logan 

A range of top-end show potential cows as well as those with sound commercial merit attracted strong bidding both ringside and online at the Legends of Logan pedigree Holstein sale, hosted by the Yates family, Castle Douglas. 

Leading the bidding was an 11,000gns call for second calver Logan Ryder Tickle Red. Classified VG87, with maternal lines tracing back to Strans-Jen-D Tequila EX96, it joins the Wiltor herd of Messrs Jones, Monmouthshire. 

Second top at 9,000gns was achieved on three occasions. Firstly, for Logan Power Tabitha Red, a VG87 classified two-year-old that stood second in both the Red and Black shows at UK Dairy Expo. Calved in January and bred back to Trent-Way Exclusive sexed, it sold to Messrs Lawrie for their Arranview herd, Ayr. 

The second 9,000gns bid secured Logan Jones Altitude Apple Strudel Red for Nick MacKenzie for his Parks herd, Muir of Ord. This VG87 classified second lactation cow is a direct daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red EX96. It sold due in December to sexed Eskil. 

Another 9,000gns bid secured Logan Avatar Rae Red for Messrs Jackson, Dumfriesshire. Fresh in March in its third lactation it had been AI'd to Acetylene sexed and is classified EX92. 

Selling at 8,500gns was the top priced maiden heifer, Logan Hulu Frosty. Backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams, tracing back to Harvue Roy Frosty EX97-3E, this black heifer was another secured by Messrs Lawrie. 

Logan Rubels Seisme Red, a recently classified EX92 third lactation cow backed by eight generations of cows classified VG and EX sold for 7,800gns to Robert Martin for Ansavalley Genetics, Carlisle. 

Averages: 80 cows and heifers in-milk, £4,083.19 (26 Red and Whites £5,052.11); 29 bulling heifers, £3,515.69 (4 Red and Whites £3,622.50); 64 heifer calves £2,882.58 (17 Red and Whites £3,902.53); 2 bull calves, £2,362.50; 3 Jersey, £4,060.

Airedale Angus sees five figure top bid 

The production sale of pedigree Aberdeen-Angus cattle, held on-farm on behalf of the Kildwick-based Airedale herd run by David and Judith Isherwood, and son Josh, topped at 10,500gns for Shadwell Evora U055. The 2018-born in-calf cow by Rawburn Fast Ball P844 was bred on the Shadwell Estate, Suffolk. Out of Evora J443, it heads to Aberdeenshire-based, Paul Allan. 

Cows with calves sold to 6,800gns for Airedale Miss Essence W647, a March 2020-born daughter of the home-bred Airedale Lord Sinden, which sold with its third female calf at foot, Miss Essence B938,  a March-born daughter and among the last crop of the herd's main stock bull, Shadwell Rock ‘N' Roll X245. It sold to the Holgate family, Rathmell.

Other cow and calf outfits also sold well, among them one at 6,000gns, again to the Holgates for Airedale Ellie U573, a 2108-born cow by Airedale Lord Perseus P325, with its sixth and second female calf at foot, Airedale Ellie B948, a March-born Rock ‘N' Roll daughter.

Topping the heifer and calf outfits at 5,800gns was the July 2022-born Airedale Blackbird Y801, again by Weeton Black Battleship and joined by its first female calf, Blackbird B965, also by Essen. The buyer was Nick Parker, who trades as Simx, Silsden Moor. 

Maiden heifers peaked at 3,300gns for Airedale Mary Belle A913, an April, 2024, Rock ‘N' Roll daughter which joined Goodwin Agriculture, Malpas.

Averages: In-calf cows, £6,475; cows and calves, £5,453, heifers and calves, £5,066, maiden heifers, £3,219; young bulls, £4,200.

High of £8,200 in Black and White online showcase

A Texel ewe lamb from Robert Cockburn's Knap flock, which sold for £8,200.

Bidding reached £8,200 in Carlise's online Black and White sale for a Texel ewe lamb from Robert Cockburn's Knap flock, Perthshire. By Duncryne Hakuna Matata and out of Clanfield ewe which bred Knap Hammerhead, it sold to Messrs Campbell, Lanark.

Making £7,000 for Mark Priestley, Co Down, was the Dutch Spotted ewe and lamb pair - Merryboro Gabrielle and Limestone Iona, which stood breed champion at this year's Balmoral Show. The duo sold to Messrs Nash, Haverfordwest.

A £4,800 bid secured a Limestone Suffolk shearling gimmer for Messrs Delves, Powys. Another from Messrs Priestley, this one is by Sportsmans Masterplan.

Making £4,000 was another Knap Texel, this time a shearling gimmer by Teiglum Goliath which also sold to Messrs Campbell.

Genetics topped at £950 three times for Knap Hammerhead cross Knap Daisy Duke embryos from Mr Cockburn, one which sold to Messrs Davis, Monmouthshire and others to Messrs Summehayes, Wellington, Somerset.

Gisburn dairy sells to £3,700

The dairy trade topped at £3,700 in Gisburn's first sale of the month where 15 of the 41 head forward sold in excess of £3,000.

Leading both the pedigree and non-pedigree sections were Jennings Farmers, Ripon. Their red, Abbeyhouse Diamondback Margaret, out of a Vogue sired dam, made the day's top price, and was followed at £3,420 by Abbeyhouse Alcove Charlotte out of a Yamasaka dam. The same vendors' also made the third top pedigree price of £3,400 with another Alcove daughter, this one out of a 13,327kg Fitz dam.

Great Eccleston, Preston, vendors J. and I. Garth took a £3,350 bid on their Bowlandview Heart Dellia, out of a Sassafras dam, while Kirkham based T. Cowell's Whitecarr herd had an entry of five pedigree heifers topping at £3,300 twice, firstly for a Peak Altaindigo daughter in the Bettina family and then for one of the Whitecarr Nora family by the same sire.

Pedigree cows also topped the £3,000 mark when Hoole, Preston breeders R. and M. Cowgill sold their second calver Hoole Blessing Mistfy by the Lowlands sire at £3,300. The same vendors sold another Blessing second calver giving 40kg, at £2,600.

 Jennings Farmers' non-pedigree section leader was a 33kg heifer selling at £3,400 followed at £3,300 for a fresh heifer from H. Raw, Eastburn, Keighley. Horwich, Bolton, vendor J. Pendlebury then sold a Brown Swiss cross heifer giving 37kg, at £3,150.

Store cattle lead Pateley Bridge at £2,620

A catalogued entry of 26 feeding bulls and 100 store cattle at Pateley Bridge sold to a top price of £2,620 for a Limousin steer from M.A. and J.R. Sharpe, Gisburn, with other Limousin steers from the sale home making £2,580 and £2,540. 

A British Blue steer from J.A.S Church, Lofthouse made £2,590. The winner in the prize show and sale of young handlers over wintered calves, a British Blue steer from Ethan Stelling, Grewelthorpe, making £2,510 selling to Nick Dalby, Darley. 

Top priced heifer was a Limousin at £2,400 from Messrs Church.

Bulls sold to £2,370 for a Limousin from E. and A.M. Simpson and Son, Heathfield. 

Averages: Bulls, £2,133.46; steers, £2,009.33; heifers, £1,820.56

High Mark Ayrshires to 3,800gns

The dispersal of the High Mark Pedigree Ayrshire herd, held on behalf of the Watson family, Leswalt, Stranraer, at Carlise saw trade top at 4,800gns, with the overall average for milkers coming to £1,859. 

Topping the sale at 3,800gns was High Mark Rollo Melanie, a Cuthill Towers Rollo daughter out of EX94 classified High Mark Obligation Melanie which stood reserve grand champion at AgriScot in 2019. It sold to Messrs Astley, Powys. 

High Mark Hawaiian Carla sold for 3,200gns. Having calved in March, it was sold producing 33kg to Hugh and Wilma Howie, Stranraer. 

Making 2,700gns was High Mark Rollo Girl 2, another Rollo daughter which also went home with Messrs Astley. 

Two lots sold for 2,600gns. The first was High Mark Rollo Fiona, a Rollo daughter which sold to Messrs Howie. 

Also at 2,600gns and topping the yearling heifers was High Mark Reality Girl, a Palmyra Tri-Star Reality daughter which sold to Messrs Service, Newton Stewart.

In calf heifers sold to a 2,550gns high to average £2,210.  Topping this group was High Mark Ladys Man Fantasy, by Beeline Ladys Man. Due in calf to Royal Flush Sea King for July, it sold to Messrs Myers, Yorkshire.  

Averages: 66 cows and heifers in milk, £1,859.45; 10 in-calf heifers, £2,210.25; 9 bulling heifers, £1,295.84; 33 heifer calves, £772.54

Top of 3,650gns at Tableyhill dispersal 

The dispersal of the pedigree Tableyhill herd of Holstein Friesians, held on behalf of Dale Whalley on-farm near Knutsford, Cheshire, saw 40 cattle sell for more than £3,000.

Sale leader at 3,650gns was a second calver by Farnear NC Felix off a 11,015kgs dam which was calving its third calf by the British Blue bull in August.

At 3,500gns was another second calver, this time an Aurora Ragnar and off a 10,664kgs dam.

Two others made 3,500gns, including the top priced heifer due again in September to the British Blue.

Also at this price was a second calver, this one a Gen Pikachu daughter which sold five months fresh due again in September. 

In-calf heifers sold to 2,900gns for a St Gen Betterment daughter, with yearlings topping at 1,550gns.

Averages: 239 milkers (including faults) £2,178; 37 in-calf heifers, £2,016; 33 heifer calves, £522;

346 head £1,882.

Prime lambs top at £270 

At the early summer show and sale of prime lambs at Hawes, a pair of Beltex cross lambs from B.C. Gregg, Angram Livestock, Masham, sold to £270 or 587p/kg to the judge Martin Hare, Lane End Farm Shop, Bradford. 

Suffolk lambs from the same home made £218 at 52kg, bought by D. Morland, Westmorland, Tebay, while the reserve champion pen of 45kg Suffolk lambs from J.R. and L.A. Capstick, Killington, sold for £196/head, again to Messrs Morland.

Hill lambs saw Cheviots from Springhill Partnership, selling for £156 at 47kg, while Mule lambs topped at £149 at 59kg from D.J. Amsden, Hawes. 

A number of horned spring lambs forward saw 37kg Rough Fells sell to £113 for E. and K. Bland and 34kg Swaledales selling to £99 for J. Sunter and Son, Simonstone.

The trade for prime hoggs saw well fleshed continentals regularly selling in excess of the 300p/kg peaking at 330p/kg from S. Featherstone, Kirkby Moorside. Heavy weighted hoggs topped at £168 from D.E. and P. Wilson and Partner, Farndale. Horned hoggs topped at £138 for heavy weight Swaledale tup hoggs from G. Calvert and Sons, Keld, with plenty selling around £130 mark.

Store trade remains steady 

Store cattle at Hexham sold to a £2,600 high for a black Limousin cross steer from first time vendor D.A. Thomoson, Thropton. His run of 34 12 to 14-month-old Limousin cross steers and heifers saw other steers sell to £2,430 and £2,420 while heifers went on to peak at £2,240.

D. T. and E. Whitfield, Consett, sold a run of two-year-old Limousins to £2,520 for a single red colored steer and sold heifers to £2,280. 

Leading the heifer trade at £2,290.00 was a Limousin cross from J. E. Woodman and Son, Great Chesters, who also sold others to £2,250.00. 

Weaned and yearling cattle met a strong trade and were dearer on the week, with Limousin-bred cattle from G.H. Walton and Sons, Greyside selling to a high of £2,200 for steers and £2,040 for heifers twice.
