Farm Safety Week – New e-learning course on keeping children safe on farms

Children's safety on farms is an important topic this Farm Safety Week, with children around the country now on their summer holidays from school.

Wales Farm Safety Partnership and Lantra Cymru have created a new e-learning course titled ‘Children on Farms' providing guidance for farmers on how to keep children safe on farms over the summer.

The course is free of charge and 45 minutes long.

It covers a wide range of child safety topics from legal responsibilities and vehicle safety to preventing falls and managing hazards around equipment and harmful substances, the course is sweeping and even stresses the importance of creating a farm safety checklist.

Children on farm

Lantra Wales director, Kevin Thomas, said: "Lantra understand the importance of children on family farms and fully support the need for the next generation to have a keen interest on the day-to-day workings of the farm, but it must be done with safety in mind.

"Lantra are fully committed to farm safety, especially for children, which is why Lantra have made this course free for everyone to complete."

Wales Farm Safety Partnership and Lantra Cymru added everyone in the farm workplace has a responsibility to protect children as their age and mental and physical immaturity renders them vulnerable,

Meleri Jones, Farming Connect's health and safety coordinator, added: "It is important to keep safety in mind when children are on farms- you don't want to live with regret."
