Coloured Ryeland record set at Ludlow

A record entry of 376 sheep at the 2023 Ryeland Flock Book Society main sale at Ludlow saw a new breed record of 1,500gns set for a Coloured Ryeland female

Coloured Ryeland record set at Ludlow

This was the female and overall champion, Moss Rose Dora, a home-bred ewe lamb by Moss Rose Bingo from M. Varmen, Macclesfield, which sold to R. Dilworth, Bradford, for the Otis flock.

The reserve champion, a shearling ewe from the Landriggs flock of E. and J. Henderson, Kinross, sold for 600gns to Messrs Varmen.

Top priced shearling ewe at 750gns was the first prize winner by Mansel Zaki from J. Stone's Scoulton flock, Melsop. The buyer was D. Evans, Pontarddulais.

The Coloured Ryeland male champion was Allderdale Cassanova, a shearling ram from A. and E. Robinson, Wigton. By Riverside Ybba and out of a Hawthorns ewe, it sold for 600gns to Messrs Stone.

The reserve champion, Churchstoke Dafydd, a ram lamb from R. Whitticase, Churchstoke, sold to the section top price of 1,000gns to O. Reade, Thirsk, who also paid 900gns for Snelson Duke Ellington, a ram lamb by Smelson Vineapola from Messrs Varmen.

Hawthornes Dynamite

Ryelands topped at 1,800gns for Hawthorns Dynamite, a ram lamb by Hawthorns Zinzan Valentine out of a Cagedale ewe from A. Robinson, Wigton, which sold to E. Davies, Llansantffraid.

Top price shearling ram at 1,750gns was Juggis Cyclone by Juggis Asteroid, bred by T. and K. Wright, Leominster, which sold to H. Coulson, Melrose.

The reserve champion, Bryn Caffo Bill, a breeding ram by Ashgrove Widget from A. and E. Parry, Gaerwen, made 1,700gns to J. and S. Wright, Llandovery.

The champion was the winning shearling ram, Pembroke Champ, from N. Morgan, Eglwyswrw, which sold for 700gns to E. Brazier, Radford.

Champion female was a shearling ewe by Ebor Ayoze from the Lodgeway flock of S. Briggs and M. Whitehurst, which sold for the top female Ryeland price of 1,250gns to P. Wills' Coast flock, Penzance. The reserve champion, a ewe lamb, Lodgeway Daenerys, from the same home, sold for 600gns to R. Dilworth.
