Records smashed at Southdown society sale

The record breaker was Preen Bank from the Robinson family, Church Stretton. Son of the imported sire Dartagnan and out of a Brant-bred dam - herself by another imported sire, Percheron - was knocked down to Maria Cork for the Yeaside flock, Ashbourne.

Ram lamb

Next best, setting a new centre and breed ram lamb record at 1,200gns, was another Dartagnan son, Littlebrook Eddie The Eagle, from Sophie Long's Littlebrook flock, Herefordshire. It sold to Nick Page on behalf of Goodwood Estate, Chichester, for the Goodwood flock. Third in line, at 1,000gns, was Prescoed Monet from Howard Wood, Usk, which sold to the Trumper family for their Beiliau flock, Abergavenny.

Females

Setting the sale's third centre record was the top-priced female at 1,850gns; a shearling ewe from Elizabeth Sargent's Offham flock. By imported sire Napoleon and out of a dam by Ridings Performer, the buyer was Roland Williams, Greenlands. Second best in the females was the female young breeders champion and overall champion from the pre-sale show, Fulfen Echo, from Emily Yates, Staffordshire, which sold to Tom Chester for the Chapel House flock, Staffordshire.

Averages: 39 shearling ewes, £389.58 (+£47), three ewe lambs, £479.50 (+£154); 15 shearling rams, £640.15 (+£46); 10 ram lambs, £457.80 (+£60).
