NFU president Tom Bradshaw said: "Defying your party is not for the faint-hearted – it is a brave thing to do – and they deserve to be applauded for these efforts. Without these abstentions, any progress towards making the Government see that they need to, at the very least, adjust this policy to protect the most vulnerable in our community, would be over."
