Charlie York writes on his journey to studying agriculture and farm management at the Royal Agricultural University, and how, despite the challenges the industry faces, a career in farming can offer young and old a rewarding career path

Charlie York, from Markfield in Leicestershire, said: "More than not, it may seem as though there is a disincentive for many farmers to continue producing food, making it feel as though an industry that forms part of the backbone of the country is being overlooked. But I think it is important, despite what is going on, to remember what the countryside can offer, especially to young people and to appreciate how rewarding working in agriculture can be."

Growing up in a rural area, agriculture has always been part of my life. From a young age I knew I wanted to be involved in farming – whether it was dragging my parents to ploughing matches, or climbing...
