Household Vulnerability Index (HVI)
Tendayi Kureya, CEO of Development Data, explains the Household Vulnerability Index (HVI) and how it helps development practitioners target and track impacts of their aid programmes.
The HVI looks at five metrics to determine vulnerability over time:
- Natural assets (e.g. soil quality, rainfall)
- Physical assets (e.g. tools, livestock)
- Financial assets (e.g. income, expenses)
- Human capital (e.g. number of able-bodied family members versus dependents)
- Social capital (e.g. strength of community and extended family relationships)
