Drive to make better use of diesel
DAIRY farmers across Wales who have installed a flow meter on their bulk diesel tank are being offered a free fuel review under the Welsh Dairy Supply Chain improvement project.
The initiative aims to gather information to provide recommendations on how to lower diesel consumption and combat ever-increasing fuel bills.
“We are also looking to identify and carry out investigations into fuel usage when carrying out individual farm machinery-based tasks,” says project officer, Neil Nicholas.
“The intention is to compare a number of alternative ways of completing the same task to determine and compare the fuel efficiencies of different methods, such as telehandler versus tractor with front loader or a self-propelled forage harvester versus a big baler.
“It will also examine in detail the costs associated with utilising land away from the farm and whether it would be more economical to rent the ground out.”
