Supermarket ombudsman 'must name and shame'

THE supermarket ombudsman must be proactive and have the ability to name and shame retailers who transgress, the NFU will say in the forthcoming consultation on the issue.

Next Thursday (February 4) will see the new strengthened Grocery Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP) come into force. It will extend the scope of the current code to the 10 biggest UK retailers and will offer added protection to suppliers.

The following day, the Government will launch a three-month consultation on the nature of the ‘enforcer’ that will oversee the code.

Terry Jones, head of the NFU’s London office, said the ombudsman would either be a standalone body or a unit within the Office of Fair Trading, as favoured by the Conservatives.

He told NFU council the NFU would set out some key priorities for the ombudsman in its response to the consultation. It will demand that it is:

  • Focussed on the code with no mission creep seen by other Government regulators.
  • Proactive and does not sit back and wait for complaints but actively sniffs them out.
  • Robust and content to name and shame those whose transgress and impose fines where appropriate.
  • And that the possibility to extend its scope to the rest of the supply chain, including processors in the red meat and dairy sectors, remains open, as the Competition Commission recommended.

He said the decision to introduce an ombudsman was a reward for the NFU’s perseverance over 10 years on the issue.

  • On Monday the 12th April 2010,at about 6:45 pm,I was shopping in the Merthyr tydfil Tesco. While waiting in the queue to pay for my groceries.I got my mobile phone & held it in the to get a signal,it may of looked that I was filming a member of the Tesco staff.I wasn't,all of sudden the person that thought I filming pushed pasted me & said I was terrorist. So I annoyed this & carried on packing my groceries. Then a member of Tesco called 'Andrew' asked me for my mobile phone & told me to leave the store.I said no I'm paying for goods & then I'll leave the store. No,he was wanting me to leave the store without my mobile phone, I said no again.I reached to take my credit card out of their machine & he throw me to the floor, smashing head on the hard surface. He called me 'English wanker twice & my Mother is a whore, your scum. With that I called out, please someone phone the police & he let go.I want to phone the police,I was told the police where on their way.I still phoned the police anyway. When the police turned up,I was escorted up stairs to a dark holding room.Where I was questioned by the police & another security guard, this is when my mobile phone was taken from me.This was returned & I asked for legal help, this upset the police & I was thrown into the back of police van & cuffed. Not once was I asked if I needed medical attention by the police or anyone.I have bruises on arms chipped tooth & a fat where one of my teeth has pieced the lip.I'm still very shaken & haven't sleep properly since this incident.I'm the victim out of this & to cap it all Tesco have given me lifetime ban.I have also lost £180 which has of fallen out my pocket while I was being attacked.
