Yellow cereal fly infections on the rise

THERE have been a number of cases across the country of dead-hearts in cereal crops caused by yellow cereal fly (Opomyza), says ADAS.

Infestation levels appear to be much higher this year than in previous years, although in most cases, the larvae have been from forward well-tillered crops and there is unlikely to be any impact on yield.

Infestation belief

ADAS believes the infestations may have occurred because there was less use of autumn pyrethroids for BYDV control.

This could be a result of the use of seed treatments such as Deter (clothianidin) for virus control or where bad weather prevented the application of foliar insecticides.
