Wind deal for Sainsbury's

THE equivalent of four Sainsbury's stores will be powered by wind-generated energy next year.

The company has signed a deal that effectively enables the creation of a new £8 million wind project at Lochhead, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) means the retailer will purchase energy direct from A7 Lochhead - and not an energy company - for the next ten years.

Displacing

Wind-generated power from the plant will displace around 65,000 tonnes of carbon from fossil power stations and provide at least 1 per cent of Sainsbury's energy demand each year, the equivalent of powering four stores.

It is seen as being a model deal on which other projects, such as the one at Lochhead Farm, can secure funding.

“Lochhead was able to find the funding to build this wind farm because we agreed to buy the entire output in advance,” said Sainsbury's Neil Sachdev.
