Vice president race - Guy Smith
ESSEX farmer and regional board chairman, Guy Smith sets out his priorities for the NFU as he pushes for the vice presidency
Age: ‘Below average.’
Farm: Mixed arable/dairy farm on the north east Essex coast.
NFU positions held: Essex county delegate, regional board chairman, governance board member, communications spokesman
Other relevant positions held: Nuffield scholar (twice). FACE board member, Landskills New Entrants board chairman, Champion for Land based studies diploma.
Main interests outside farming: Three kids, pub-life, hap hazard tennis, random ornithology, bodged gardening.
Tell us something surprising about you: I once appeared on page three of the Sun (but have told both my daughters that it is nothing to be proud of).
Who is your hero? My dear old dad (recently departed).
Why are you the best person for the job?
Proven communicator. Seasoned and tireless campaigner for an improved image of British agriculture. Established track record in working to inspire the next generation about the wonders of farming. Experience of working with all levels of government to get a better deal for farming. More generally, I display charm, wit, good looks and a sound intellect alongside an endearing but natural modesty.
What would you change within the NFU to improve it?
More focus on the grassroots and younger members. Recognition of the need for greater vibrancy at branch and county level but also a realisation that doesn’t just mean trying to turn the clock back. Greater priority given to better communication to both farmers and non-farmers. Stronger and more strategic alliances with other farming unions in Europe.
What farming issue(s) would be your priority?
Re-conquer markets lost in the last twenty years, particularly in our home market. Re-invent our reputations as trusted custodians of the beautiful and bio-diverse countryside. Regain some of the food pound lost in the last twenty years. Remind regulators and NGOs of our world beating animal welfare record. Re-build our self belief and hand it on to the next generation.
Guy Smith sets out his stall to our East Midlands members in Uppingham on January 19
