UK likely to get EU flood payout
THE UK looks set to receive £115 million from the European Union to help cover the estimated £3 billion cost of the summer floods.
The Government applied to the EU Solidarity Fund back in August and has recently received a strong indication that the bid will be successful.
Although the funds have not yet been formally approved, the BBC today report EU commissioner Danuta Hubner to have said: “I don't expect any surprises there.”
If approved, funds will not be available until next year but once they are, they will have to be spent within 12 months.
An NFU spokesman said: “This is clearly a sensible move by the Government to help the country get back on its feet. Whether farms will benefit from this money directly is unclear but the NFU will continue to try to get the best possible help to farmers and growers affected by the recent appalling weather.”
