Stopping GM spread

THE German government is to fund research projects to develop methods to limit the spread of GM plants.

The 23 projects, costing €8million, will be conducted between now and 2011.

Crops being studied include oilseed rape and maize. One project will look at the potential for breeding low persistence oilseed rape lines to limit oilseed rape volunteers.

Research will also be carried out on environmental impacts of a new type of Bt maize resistant to two main chewing pests, the European corn borer and the Western corn rootworm.
