Victory for ‘top 10’ fresh third calver in Dairy Shorthorn championship
THE Dairy Shorthorn championship title went to Nejay Erin 2, a third calver, bred and exhibited by Neil Madeley of Birdgnorth, Shropshire.
By Morwick Sand Ranger, this cow was shown fresh, having calved at the end of January.
She has previously taken the championship at Staffordshire show and is in the top 10 of the new Dairy Shorthorn PLI list. Erin 2, out of Cotley Erin 72, is part of Mr Madeley’s 85-strong herd.
A sixth calver, Elkington Gentle from Jenny Davies of St Clears, Carmarthen, took the Shorthorn reserve. Gentle, by Horizon Ranger Red, calved in October and has had peak yields of more than 9,000kg. She was champion exhibitor-bred at the Welsh Dairy Show in 2006.
The Shorthorns also had a heifer championship, held on the first day of the two-day show. This was won by David and Shirley Baynes with Marleycote Fleur 30, a home-bred, January-born calf by Fradon Jet Red.
