Rainbow is top Guernsey
HE may only own half of one cow, but that was enough for Neil Sales to win the Guernsey championship at the inaugural National All Breeds Show at Stoneleigh.
Bickfield Rainbow 51 was bred by M.C. Durbin of Bristol, for whom Mr Sales has been showing cattle for 35 years. He and wife Kim bought a half share of the December 2005-born Guernsey in October, with Colin Evans of Bancyfelin, Carmarthen, purchasing the other half.
“Buying her was a one-off because she’s an exceptional show cow,” said Mr Sales.
She produced her second calf in November, having given 8,500 litres in her first lactation. Milked with Ian Crouch’s Blacknor Cracker herd at Blandford Forum, Dorset, she is currently giving 46.5 litres a day and will soon be served.
While complementing her dairyness, strength and udder attachment, judge Philip Cox of West Devon was particularly impressed with Bickford Rainbow on parade.
“Her locomotion is probably one of the best I’ve even seen,” he said.
