Natives on top at Scottish Premier Meat Exhibition

NATIVE British breeds scored highly in the Scottish Premier Meat Exhibition carcase competition at Scotbeef’s plant at Bridge of Allan, Stirling.

Champion carcase was a seven-eighths Aberdeen-Angus steer, and reserve a pure-bred Beef Shorthorn steer in a competition with a large entry of largely Continental cross entries.

The 390.2kg champion carcase, which classified O+4H killed out at 58.2 per cent and was from a steer consigned by Sandy Fordyce and son. Sandy, who run a herd of 70 Aberdeen-Angus cross cows and a pedigree herd of 20 cows, at Bridgefoot, Kemnay, Inverurie.

The reserve champion, from Quality Meat Scotland chairman, Donald Biggar, Chapelton, Castle Douglas, also classified O+ and 4L for fat cover. It weighed 302.1kg.

Mr Biggar runs herds of pedigree Beef Shorthorn and Aberdeen-Angus as well as a 400-cow suckler herd.
