Judges face a supreme test
SOME of the best known names in pedigree livestock circles have been lined up to judge this year’s supreme championships at the Royal Welsh Show.
In the beef ring, the task of placing the best overall individual animal will be down to John Astley, from Llanerch-y-medd, Anglesey, while both the junior bull and Fitzhugh breed pairs will be judged by Jane Smith, from Usk, Monmouthshire.
Sorting out the winners in the prestigious team-of-five competition will be Peter Donger, from Towcester, Northants, and the group-of-three championship will be judged by Dennis Jones, Caersws, Powys.
Dairy ring
The supreme individual cow and heifer championships and the production-inspection competition in the dairy ring will be judged by Edward Crank, from Ince, near Chester, while Andrew Hope, Tarporley, Cheshire will be lining up both the pairs and teams of five.
In the inter-breed sheep ring, judging the native upland, lowland, Continental and overall champion of champions awards will be George Hughes, from Telford, Shropshire. Pam Chilman, from Presteigne, Powys, will be judging the pairs championship, with Roger Weaver, Frampton Cotterell, Bristol, placing the groups of three.
Judging the Lloyd Family Award – confined to hill breed groups of three – will be Gwyn Davies, Talybont-on-Usk, Brecon, Powys. The pig inter-breed championship judge is C.H. Penrice, from Milnthorpe, Cumbria.
