Ironstone goes through the beef card
A LIMOUSIN heifer, bred in the purple, went through the card to take the beef inter-breed title at Newark and Nottinghamshire Show.
Ironstone Dumandy, home-bred by Smiths of Bloxham, Banbury, was an embryo calf and is the first daughter of their £50,000 purchase Bailea Umandy, by Wilodge Fantastic, who cost £42,000. She was continental champion at Smithfield last year on her only previous outing.
Standing reserve was the Aberdeen-Angus bull Chathill Eugo owned by John and Brian McClintock, Macclesfield. It was the first show for the four-year-old, by Vermillon Payweight, which was bought privately from his breeder, Pip Robson, Northumberland, six months ago.
Judge Ian Campbell, Alnwick, described his champion as ‘very hard to fault, showing excellent breed characteristics and well grown for her age’ and said the reserve was also a ‘very good example’ of his breed, with size and shape, who moved particularly well.’
Jersey cow
In the dairy section, it was an 11-year-old Jersey cow that took top honours against younger rivals. Woodbine Cassandra 2, by Woodbine Imperial Storm-trooper, an eighth calver owned by Mitchell Oldershaw, was second at the National Breed Show in February, not having previously been shown since 2002.
She was bought as a calf by Mr Oldershaw, who milks 100 Jerseys and 100 Holsteins at Lockington, Derbyshire.
In reserve was Holstein champion, Bilsthorpe Shottle Sue 2, owned by Philip Rhodes of Wragby. The second calver is by Picston Shottle, out of Bilsthorpe Sue 23, herself a four-time breed champion at Newark.
More entries
In the sheep section, entries were higher than they had been for some years with more breed sections.
The inter-breed winner was Frank Rushton, Matlock, with his home-bred shearling ewe, making her show debut. By his home bred ram, Fresh Fields Outstander, her next outing is likely to be Cheshire County Show.
In reserve was Liz Needham, with the Suffolk shearling ram, Strathisla Sea Eagle, by Lakeview Leroy, bought at Kelso last year to use as a stock ram. Ms Needham runs 30 Suffolk ewes at Grantham, Lincolnshire.
The strongly contested group of three award went to Charles Sercombe’s Charollais.
