Weather restricts Beeston dairy entries

THE extreme weather conditions curtailed the entry at the January mid-month sale of pedigree and unregistered Holsteins and coloured breed dairy cattle at Beeston.

Instead of the 240 cattle expected the entry was reduced to 150 head and weather also had an effect on the number of buyers present with several long distance buyers failing to make the journey.

The milking cows and heifers, however, were in keen demand and trade was led by a heifer from D.J.D. and J.B. Taylor, Shrewsbury.

The heifer, sired by Picston Shottle, was fresh calved and giving 36kg daily. The hammer fell to J.L. and E.M. Parker and Son, Stafford, who also took home another heifer from the same home, a heifer sired by Askew Reece and giving 32kg she realised £2,100.  The Taylors also had two more heifers, which sold in excess of £2,000.

The on-going dispersal from D.J. and S. Windsor, Agden, Whitchurch, produced a top bid of  £2,180 for a heifer selling locally to P. and A. Howard.

At £2,000 was a heifer from Mark Bowden, Malpas, Cheshire. This pedigree heifer sired by Askew Reece sold giving 33.5kg daily. She was snapped up by Geoff Thomasson, Norbury.

Cows were in keen demand, with the top selling to £2,000 for a pedigree cow, Lavenham Annie 1361, sired by Merchant and consigned by R. Darlington, Whitchurch. It was knocked down to J.G. and C.A. Bayley, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, who also secured several other lots.

Shorthorn milking heifers sold to £1,550 and £1,500 for two good pedigree heifers from J.A.C. Madeley and Son, Telford, Shropshire. Both sold to Messrs Johnson, Tarporley, Cheshire.

In-calf heifers from J.A. Longford and Sons, Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, sold to a top of £1,680 twice.

Averages: 147 cows and milking heifers, £1,330.14; 14 in-calf heifers, 3 heifer calves, £330.

Auctioneers: Wright Manley.
