Two gimmer lambs share 8,000gns best price
THERE was a joint top price of 8,000gns at the show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females at Borderway Mart on Monday.
Gimmer and shearling averages were up, but gimmer lambs were slightly down, although 18 more than last year were sold.
Judge James Herdman, Alnwick, awarded the championship to a gimmer lamb by A5 Gragareth out of a ewe by Y25 Hewgill, from W.M. Hutchinson, Kirkby Stephen. It made the day’s joint top price, selling to Paul Brown, Ravenstonedale, Kirkby Stephen.

At the same money was another gimmer lamb, this time from the Hewgill flock of Messrs Lord, North Stainmore, Kirkby Stephen. By B41 Hewgill out of a ewe by Z14, it sold to George Shields, Ravenstonedale, Kirkby Stephen.
Next top price was 4,400gns, paid by Lewis Forster, Hexham, for a gimmer lamb from P.M. Smith, Brampton. This one was by Y7 The Dyke out of a ewe by X2 The Dyke.
At 4,000gns was another from W.M. Hutchinson, this time by Y25 Hewgill out of a ewe by the £10,000 W1 Keer, which sold to Robert Wallace, Girvan, Ayrshire.
The top-priced gimmer shearling was from the Midlock flock of John Wight and Sons, Crawford, Lanarkshire. This one, by A13 Kirkby Redgate out of a ewe by N25 Nunscleugh was carrying triplets to W25 Midlock Controversy and sold to D. Jarvie, Muthill, Perthshire, for 3,500gns.
Averages: 20 ewes, £753.38; 72 gimmer shearlings, £1,046.94; 51 gimmer lambs, £1,272.76.
